I lit the match again, the wind threatening to extinguish my only warmth.
I have to start the fire.
Now.
Not a good time, considering I was in the woods at midnight.
Possibly because my sister, Lucia, found a cursed book.
My hair whipped in the wind as I struggled to get a hold of the fire.
Flames surged, I smiled.
Lucia walked up to me, voice filled with concern. "Are you sure about this?" She placed a hand on my shoulder, squeezing it lightly.
I nodded and looked at the cursed book before me.
I threw the matched and watched the flames engulf the book. "It's our only way now."
"But will it work?" Lucia gently asked. Eyes wide with hope.
Will it work? I did not know either.
One way to find out.
I smiled at myself, eyes on the flames as heat scorched the grass, spreading.
"We're trying. Let's hope for the best."
No response.
I furrowed my brows and looked to my side but lucia was not there.
"What-?" I looked around.
"Lucia, this isn't funny."
The sudden absence of heat had goosebumps crawling up my body. I whipped my head towards the fire- but no fire was there, as if it never existed.
The book was gone.
My heart pounded in my chest, loud enough I was sure it echoed.
"Lucia-!? This isn't funny-!"
I heard a crunch to my right, I turned but saw nothing.
A sound to my left, nothing.
My breath hitched-pain, blindingly white hot pain-I looked down at my stomach to see crimson pooling beneath the thin fabric of my tank top.
A curved blade had pierced me from behind, though I was too scared to see.
Blade left flesh with a sickening, wet sound.
I dropped to my knees, my wound protesting. I desperately wrapped my arms around myself, trying to stop what little blood I could.
But darkness crept around my edges, my head felt light-headed.
Then darkness took me.
