The next day--

By the time Suniti took her seat on the first bench, the classroom already felt heavy.

Not noisy.

Not chaotic.

Heavy.

She sat straight, hands folded near her notebook, eyes lowered—not submissive, just tired. There was a calm about her that came from having decided something and refusing to explain it to anyone.

The door opened.

Sohum walked in.

His gaze went to her instantly.

It wasn’t accidental.

It wasn’t curious.

It was intentional.

He didn’t pause. Didn’t acknowledge it. But something sharp passed through his eyes before his expression settled back into cold neutrality.

“Good morning,” he said.

The reply was scattered, uncertain.

He placed his notebook on the desk, fingers precise, controlled.

“Since preparation appears optional to some,” he said calmly, “we’ll begin with questions.”

The room tensed.

His eyes lifted.

“Suniti.”

She looked up.

“Yes, sir.”

“Explain yesterday’s concept.”

Her lips pressed together for a moment before she spoke.

“Sir, you didn’t complete that topic yesterday.”

A murmur rippled through the class.

Sohum didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t smile either.

“Then explain whatever you can,” he said, tone smooth. “Or is that beyond you as well?”

Suniti held his gaze.

“With respect,” she replied evenly, “I don’t believe in answering questions that haven’t been taught.”

The air shifted.

Something dangerous settled between them.

Sohum turned toward the board, lips curving slightly.

“Confidence without competence,” he said, “is often mistaken for intelligence.”

Suniti didn’t look away.

“And competence without clarity,” she replied softly, “is just confusion in authority.”

Silence slammed into the room.

He didn’t respond.

But from that moment on, the class stopped being a lecture.

It became a contest.

He never shouted at her after that.

He learned something better.

Control.

Every answer she gave was questioned.

Every explanation dissected.

Every pause measured.

“Explain again.”

“That approach is inefficient.”

“You assume too much.”

His words were calm. Polite, even.

But they were surgical.

And Suniti—

she didn’t retreat.

She answered with precision. Corrected him when he overlooked something. Looked at him directly when he spoke, unblinking, unafraid.

No emotion.

No hesitation.

The class watched.

They didn’t see humiliation.

They saw friction.

Something relentless.
