Joachim and Anna are worried for their daughter Maria because she had to go to Bethlehem for the census just in the last month of her pregnancy, when she would have needed to stay near her family.
But one night, while they are praying for their daughter, for her husband and for their little baby, they see a star in the sky. Joachim looks at the star, and, he doesn't know why, he knows that his grandson was born.
After some days the little family arrives back in Nazareth. Anna sees them approaching their home and goes to call her husband immediately. What joy he feels seeing that his young daughter is fine. He runs to embrace her and, immediately, when he looks in her eyes, he can see that she is really happy, the happiness that only a mother can prove when she holds her baby.
Even if she is evidently tired, she is tenderly rocking her little child in her arms. Joseph is beaming for joy, and he looks at his Maria with love and admiration.
But the moment Joachim will never NEVER forget is when Joseph takes Jesus from Maria’s arms and says: “Little Jesus, this is your grandfather.”
And he gives his father-in-law that tiny creature to hold in his arms. Every grandparent cherishes the moment they behold their children’s children. It is the sign of life that goes on, together with the values of love, family, life. It is the tie that binds one generation to the next, it is the infinite circle of life.
But in Joachim's arms he doesn't only have his little grandson, but he knows he is holding the Saviour of mankind the prophets have announced for many many years. Anna is watching the little baby in awe and veneration, and they go back into the house with Joseph and Maria without being able to speak, completely overwhelmed by what God’s will has given them, a poor family living in a modest house, but united by love and faith in Him Who can transform your life completely.
Giulia and Mario contemplated the nativity scene for a few moments in silence, then Giulia exclaimed:
“Jesus was lucky, because he had his mother, his father, but also his grandmother and grandfather. Our grandpa was in Heaven when we were born, wasn't he?”
Silvia and Anna exchanged a glance, and Silvia answered in a soft voice:
“Yes, darling, but I am sure he is watching you, and he is proud of his grandchildren…”
Mario asked:
“Granny, can we put Jesus in the Nativity scene tomorrow after Christmas dinner?”
“Yes, children. We will put him into his little crib before going to the midnight Mass, ok?”
“Can we show Neil and Billy your wonderful nativity scene?” Anna had invited to the Christmas dinner Neil and Billy, the Inspector and one of the agents in town, who were orphans and didn't have a family in Rosary.
Giulia and Mario loved spending time with the two young men. Since they had learnt they were orphans, they always insisted on having them for lunch or for family celebrations.
Anna loved the two policemen, and she always agreed to extend the invitation to them. Neil had grown fond of the woman, and he and Billy always accepted and had become part of the family.
