As soon as the last volleyball practice before Christmas was over, Mario went with Giulia to their grandmother to listen to the story about Joseph.
They ran up the stairs to the first floor, where Anna was waiting for them. The children couldn't realize how much they were comforting their grandmother, how their daily visit was helping her to face the first Christmas festivities without her son.
They sat down on the sofa in front of the statue of a man with a beard leaning on a cane and with his head bent. Anna asked:
“Do you know anything about Joseph?”
Giulia replied immediately:
“We know that he was Maria’s husband, and Father George told us at Easter that he died before Jesus was crucified.”
“Yes, children. I have always admired Joseph, because he knew that his son would suffer, but he always took care of him when Jesus was a child…”
“But Maria loved Joseph, didn’t she?” Mario asked. “And Father George told us that Jesus was always a good boy, and he loved Joseph…”
“Of course, they were a happy family, but at the beginning it was not easy for Joseph… Let me tell you the story…”
