Dora felt dread echoing from the pit of her stomach. She needed proof from the creatures, fast. Surely something of theirs could survive light…?30Please respect copyright.PENANAHhyjhruX5V
“Scarlet,” Dora began. “Ya do know what kinda trouble I’m in, don’tcha?”30Please respect copyright.PENANAYghf3cQlvK
“Yes, Miss Dora.”30Please respect copyright.PENANAW2WQdtpcZi
“Well…” Dora continued. “Only thing’s gonna git me outta this is proof… I need it quick… So… can ya git in that lift cage… see what ya find… and bring up anythin’ that counts as proof?”
Dora thought she was being wildly optimistic, and she wasn’t wrong. A loyal maid though she was, Scarlet couldn’t possibly accept to fulfill this request.30Please respect copyright.PENANAFsv6R2vfUI
“I’m sorry, Miss Dora,” Scarlet said. “But when you pay me to work as a maid, this is not the kind of work I do.”
Dora waited until it was nighttime, when everybody was asleep. She was desperate. Tomorrow the detective and the chief would come, ready to see the evidence that she didn’t have. She needed it, and she had to take matters into her own hands. Dora stepped into the spacious ornate lift cage. She threw the switch, and a collection of memories rushed through her brain, from when she and Calvin first discovered the creatures. The motor whirred and hummed softly, then, after a few hours, the sound died away.
When the workers started the lift cage up the next morning, as Dora had told them the previous time when she sent the note, a most shocking sight greeted them.30Please respect copyright.PENANATrZSuODK2p
The whole enormous lift cage was filled to the brim with sparkling, twinkling gold bars, and there was a single small square of parchment inside a leather pouch.
