The thing about happiness.. is that you only know it, when its truly gone.
This was such a thing for Quinn, the war had recently started so she had to stay in a bunker with a couple of her neighbors who didn't want to take part in the war for this.. 'Midway'? Quinn didn't even know what the hell it was supposed to be, and what kinda name is 'Midway'? Its stupid, that's what it is!
In the year of 5027 everything was fine, nothing wrong, no war sirens that were annoying and kept everyone awake at night, hell, Quinn even got that scholarship she always needed for Art College, it was great!
Then one day at the start of 5028 word had gotten out about something that the government was working on called The Midway. Quinn had never been interested in the drama that the news talked about, so she just ignored it, like she usually did. Oh what a mistake that was.
Quinn was angry, upset at the world for ruining the life she had so carefully planned out, she loved her art, she practiced day and night trying to paint since she was young because she wanted to be an artist. She had FINALLY gotten a scholarship and it was just torn away from her, in a mere second, all of it. Gone.
She used to paint sunsets. Now she couldn’t even remember the last time she saw the sky, all she could see were the grey walls of the bunker, the paint slowly fading and peeling in some places.
The bunker smelled like metal and unwashed clothes, with twenty people packed into a space meant for ten, her only joy in the world now was her dog, Baker.
The usually happy and upbeat dog, the one that used to run into the park and tried to catch squirrels and even pulled random fish out of the lake sometimes, seemed sadder nowadays, Baker's tale not wagging as much as it did in the past, he usually just laid in the corner of the room with a stuffed rabbit he managed to get before they had to go into the bunker.
Quinn heard the muffled noises of gun shots, screaming and bombs going off and some of her neighbors talking in the bunker, some on they're phones watching what they could find of the news, she heard one newscaster on someone's phone saying that and quote "The World could quite possibly end in a second if Humanity gets its hands on The Midway, President Callaway had this to say-", and the rest she just tuned out.
She put her hand over her face and just sighed, she really needed a cigarette around this time.. But she couldn't because there weren't any fucking windows.. Great. She really should've gotten that Headspace app while she had the time.
