He saw his view change from beautiful mountains blanketed with snow to fog-covered, hazy plains. The sky was clear, but his mind was turbulent. Unresolved emotions and bittersweet memories. It was too much for him to take, so he tried to take a nap, but he could not. Maybe his sleep, too, wanted him to go through this emotional turmoil.
As the plane landed on the land, he was filled with an uneasy feeling; he remembered the excitement he used to feel years ago.
When he collected his luggage, he felt the light weight of it weird; bringing a heavy suitcase filled with gifts for his chacha, chachi, his cousin sister, and of course her had become a muscle memory.
As his taxi passed by the streets of Delhi, he could not stop himself from reminiscing about the memories that were too distant yet too clear.
---
If things had not turned the way they did, maybe he would not be standing in front Army Lounge in New Delhi; he would have been at the Defense Colony at his chacha's house. Happy times with them and giving the gifts and sweets his mother would have packed for them from Dehradun. Then maybe he would have sneaked out of the house with the excuse to explore the place, and somehow he would land on the third street from his chacha's house. A quick missed call and she would come out.
---
10th May 2015—that was the day when they first met. Randomly in a neighborhood park near his chacha's house. He remembers how he was busy admiring the flowers when his eyes landed on her. He saw her staring at him from afar. When she refused to look away when he locked eyes, he found her amusing. It was bold and unexpected—and made him take a few steps toward her.
When Kiara saw him, she could not keep her eyes off his athletic build. When he introduced himself as an NDA cadet, she was impressed enough to hide her expression. Aditya knew the effect he had on her and was well aware of the effect she had on him too. Not every day you find yourself talking with someone so gorgeous and so confident that taking your eyes off her becomes a difficult task.
It was a quick infatuation for him in the beginning, but he fell for her hard enough to come back to her every time he was in Delhi. Every time he would return from an intense operation. There were times he would find himself going through her Instagram, and that would bring a soft smile to his face.
Yes, he was in love.
However, he could not say if this was the case for her. It felt genuine, it felt natural, until he realized it was not.
7th January 2021—that's the day he received a call from her. It lifted his mood instantly, only to be left with a hollow feeling when he heard her cold voice.
"I cannot keep waiting for you forever. Where are you when I need you? I have found myself waiting for you more than being with you. I can't take it anymore."
Before he could say anything, she hung up the phone, and when he tried to dial back, the phone was switched off.
Everything became clear when he saw her photo with another guy, hand in hand, on Instagram. With the caption 'You were with me when no one was.'
Before he could process what he saw, he was blocked.
In a second, the past six years unraveled into nothing.
The way his feelings turned into a hurricane and his dreams shattered like a mirror breaking. That still aches, strong enough for him to approach anyone else with the same intensity.
That was an abrupt end.
It left him hollow and shook him. But he never gave himself time to process it, to get over it in a healthy way.
Eventually he did start believing maybe it was difficult to love someone like him. That became bitter with time and took the form of 'love is nothing but a well-crafted sweet lie to use others.'
---
Deep down even he knew what the reason was he was standing in the Army lounge reception and not his chacha's house. But he tried to mask it with, 'This is near the Central Secretariat Area, and he has no time to meet people.'
He thought he had overcome his past. Coming back to Delhi after four years proved to him he has not.
