I've been away from writing for quite a while now. But I couldn't ignore the call to create any longer!
Scars: Marks of the Mind is, essentially, a metaphor for the most unstable and draining period of life. Someone who had *considerable* influence on my work decided to cut me off, which made writing a painful reminder of this person AND an absolute chore as I struggled without a muse to inspire me :(
Anyway, this story is different to my other works in several ways. Firstly, it is not set within the same world at all (Not an Empyrea book!). Secondly, it's a different style of storytelling than what I'm used to as it will primarily be about the human psyche rather than the misuse of technology. Lastly, it will be shorter than my Novellas and thus comprised of no more than 16,000 words (around 40% of the average Novella).
With all that "important" information out of the way, let's establish some concepts for the avoidance of doubt:
- This book is set in a city-state known as Lumière (The French word for "Light")
- The world has almost the same rules as our own apart from one abnormality: Somatic Scars. Trauma, of course, normally only leaves internal scars but here they present externally as well.
- Some people are born with the innate ability to learn how to "Weave" these scars to bring out the emotions and trauma that created them in the first place, though this comes at a cost. Doing this creates an "Echo" where the suffering of the other person becomes bound to the Weaver temporarily. In other words, do it too often and you will go insane.
- The city is not particularly different to any real ones. But the presence of scars, and the dangerous potential they have, means that there is a body to regulate how many each person has. This is a law known as the Scar-Ceiling.
- This body is known as the Keloidic Authority. It is a little bit like the Magisterium from His Dark Materials or the Inquisition from the First Law series. They are not necessarily evil, If I asked myself in the past I probably would have agreed with them.
- The Authority employs most Weavers.
That should be everything. I hope to have this book finished by the end of November and ideally in around two weeks. We shall see about that, though :)
Thanks (in advance) for checking this out!
