Luna immediately called a meeting among her subordinates with whom she was handling the case, and they all converged in the meeting room.
“Good morning, guys. This is Kieran, my friend. I think he might be of help in our investigation as he is very good in criminal psychology,” Luna explained, pointing to Kieran.
They all greeted Kieran halfheartedly, with skeptical looks clearly showing on their faces. Kieran didn't mind their strange looks as he nodded back in response to their greetings.
“I'd like each of you to stand up and give us a general report of your individual investigations, starting with you, Sophia,”
Luna said as she went to sit beside Kieran.
Sophia immediately stood up, picked up the file in front of her, and made her way to the front of the central table as she began reporting her investigations.
“According to the victim's parents, the student who was kidnapped was a fifteen-year-old boy. Before the day of the incident, he closes from school by 4:00 p.m. and gets home between 4:40 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. But on this very day, he was still not home by 6:00 p.m.; this made the parents raise an alarm,” Sophia said.
“Did you find anything in common between the victim of the last case and the present one?” Luna asked as she rested her chin on her hands.
“There’s no major similarity between them except the fact that they are both high school students in the same grade as well as the same age,” Sophia said while Kieran jotted them down.
Luna motioned to Asher, and he quickly stood up and went to replace Sophia as he began his report.
“I retrieved the footage of the bus stop, and I would like to say that the mode of disappearance of the second teenager has a striking resemblance to that of the first. They both disappeared at the bus stop by walking down a path with no CCTV, expressionlessly,” Asher said with one hand in the front pocket of his trousers.
Immediately after Asher finished his report, Lyra stood up and walked to the front to give her report.
“I went to the crime scene with Sam, and we didn't find anything suspicious or out of place,” Lyra said calmly.
As Lyra went back to her seat, Kieran stood up and walked to the front under the watchful gaze of the team members. He picked up a marker and faced the whiteboard in the room. He then started drawing some lines on the board, connecting the victims' pictures to the crime scene, to their parents, and to their school.
He suddenly stopped and faced Asher.
“At what time did those students disappear?” Kieran asked.
“They both disappeared at exactly 4:17 p.m.,” Asher answered.
“Alright, Sophia, what are the identities of the victims and their parents?” Kieran asked, shifting his gaze to Sophia.
“The first victim is a girl while the second is a boy. They are both students of Wisdom High School; they are both in the same grade as well as the same age. As for their parents, the first victim's father is an architect while her mother is a nurse, while the second victim's father is a businessman while his mother is a full-time housewife,” Sophia explained.
Kieran slowly turned from Sophia as if ruminating on something as his gaze landed on Lyra.
“Tell me more about the strange path. Where does it lead to, and why are there no cameras there?” Kieran asked.
“That path leads to an underground park that leads to a road on another street. There are no residential buildings there. The cameras there are old, and they have not been functioning well. They have been taken off but not replaced yet,” Lyra said.
After Kieran heard Lyra's explanation, he started pacing to and fro for about five minutes before he suddenly came to an abrupt halt.
“There’s something wrong with this case. There has not been any call for ransom, which means the kidnappers are not doing it for the money. We haven't found their bodies, which means there’s a fifty percent possibility that they are still alive. They are both from the same school and the same age, which makes me certain that it's a serial kidnapping by a mentally unstable criminal for a particular cause. And I think nothing in this case gives any clue. So, I think the only way out of this case points to the victims' personal lifestyles and that school,” Kieran said, after which he quietly folded his arms.
On hearing Kieran's analysis, the team members' impression of him eased a little bit.
“So, what should we do next?” Luna asked as she readjusted her sitting position.
“First of all, the basics of criminal psychology is to think like the criminal by putting yourself in the position of the criminal. And I think there must be a reason why he picked that same bus stop and that same path, and from what I know about criminal psychology, he won't change that pattern for any reason. So, place some cameras on that path. Check for data of students with the same age, grade, and school as the victims and bring it to me. For now, place some officers to keep watch on that bus stop and tell them to be on the lookout for any strange occurrence,” Kieran said.
“I also think we should visit the victims' houses as well as their school to gather more intel that might be useful for the case,” Luna said, facing Kieran.
“I think so too,” Kieran said.
“Alright, guys, get to work. Let's meet here again by 4:00 p.m. to give reports concerning the results of the investigations.
You all should be careful during the investigations,” Luna said as she stood up from her seat.
They all stood up and left the meeting room to start working on the assignments given to them. Luna and Kieran also left the station in Kieran's car as he drove toward the house of the first victim.
