The wind cuts across the glass skybridge, like the air itself is being sliced into two clean segments.

Lin Yuan stands at the center of the bridge, looking down at the traffic below.

tail-lights drag into long red filaments, stretched by the fingertips of the night, then clipped off the moment they sink into the fog.

03:49 a.m.

The city holds its breath for the last few seconds before collapse.

He presses his fingers against his temple. the pain there is not simply pain — it is a reversal, like memory pushing upward, trying to break back to the surface.

A subway train roars through the dark tracks beneath the bridge.

The vibration runs straight through the bridge’s spine, and that little pulse of pain in his head becomes razor sharp.

He whispers to himself —

He has walked this skybridge twice already — in the dream.

now it is reality.

But the border between dream and reality feels like wet paper — the ink has already bled across the edge, merging everything into gray.

His comms unit vibrates.

Lin Yuan’s thumb hesitates.

For a second, the wind brushes his ear like someone leaning in to whisper.

“But memory is built-into me,” he murmurs. “to not recall… i’d have to remove myself first.”

At the end of the bridge, a streetlamp flickers.

He stares at it.

The same one.

The lamp from the dream.

The lamp in reality.

Identical.

Even the scratch on the metal casing is in the exact same spot.

He walks toward it and touches the cold metal with his fingertips.

In the next instant — soft breathing brushes his ear.

“Yuan.”

That voice is so faint it seems to come from the other side of the air.

But it isn’t hallucination — the skin along his neck rises with chills.

He doesn’t turn around.

But he knows someone is standing behind him.

Less than ten centimeters.

He closes his eyes.

“You’re not her,” he whispers.

The wind waits.

The lamp goes out.

His fingertips go cold.

Invisible strings rise from beneath the bridge, threading upward into his palm, sinking through skin, into the bone.

Han Zhe Kai calls him.

The voice is fractured, chopped by interference:

“Yuan! stay away from that lamp! the doctor says it’s —”

Signal breaks.

Lin Yuan tries to speak.

But his throat produces no sound.

Because “she” is standing at the other end of the bridge.

Silver-gray hair

heterochromic eyes

the same lamp in her hand

but the light inside is no longer gentle.

It is surgical cold.

She stares at him.

And the city’s light dies.

Only she remains lit.

She speaks softly:

“Time is not going forward. time is only — moving toward you.”

The lamp turns on.

Everything that was reversed —

is violently snapped forward.

The entire reel tears itself to the end.

Lin Yuan blacks out.

The world is extracted.

But before the blackout, he hears a whisper pressed against his inner ear —

Not external sound.

I ternal.

— “Who made you forget me?”

Black.

Wind blows from the end of ruins, lifting pale particles.

They look like cold ash, rotating slowly, falling quietly.

Lin Yuan pushes up from the fractured white mist.

This is not the same place.

“Third layer?” he breathes.

His voice has no echo.

Which means — no memory projection is present here.

This is not “Echo Death City.”

This is — blank.

He stands, breathing shallow.

Li is gone.

But the lamp remains.

Floating in air, needing no physical mount.

He calls.

Nothing answers.

But the lamp trembles.

Not wind.

Response.

An unnatural chill crawls through his ribs.

Li is absent — but the lamp responds.

Like a process terminated before consciousness fully closed, leaving an imprint.

He reaches — his fingertip touches the light —

And the whole world convulses.

Vision whites out.

The scene resets — a research facility.

Corridors. white lights. glass walls.

But they are pasted over the dream’s surface — the edges flicker.

Hologram-thin.

“…Not reality,” Lin Yuan says.

But their voices play.

Dr. Su’s lips move behind glass — but the audio comes from everywhere:

“LY-021, return.”

Emotionless. template voice.

Han Zhekai speaks too:

“You hear us, right? Yuan? wake up.”

But his eyes are unfocused.

Not him speaking.

The dream is imitate-voicing him.

Lin Yuan backs away. pulse sharp.

The doctor was right.

The dream is not memory.

The dream is now learning.

It mimics people.

He turns to flee.

The light-wall warps inward, like pulled by an unseen hook.

The “real” images distort, tear, and black ink spills out.

Living ink.

Like something at the bottom of the dream feeding on “shape” to create entity.

The ink pours into a human contour.

The face lifts.

Li’s face.

But eyeless.

Hollow sockets — black.

“…Li?” his throat constricts.

The shadow opens its mouth — no cords — but the voice is layered, glitch-deep:

“…You are late…”

Lin Yuan retreats. the shadow advances.

Not walking.

Drifting.

As if the dream pushes that shape forward, simply to reach him.

Lin Yuan shuts his eyes, crushes the fear.

— Li would not be this.

This is not her.

This is the dream picking up her silhouette to manipulate him.

He breaks free of fear and screams at the empty air:

“Li! where is the real you?! are you still there?!”

The shadow stops.

Then fractures.

Into thousands of black points — a storm of noise — scattered across the blank world.

Silence returns.

The lamp remains.

Light weak — almost dead.

He approaches, presses his palm to the glass — tiny static jumps his skin.

— Information transfers.

Not image.

Not audio.

Intuition-memory.

In one second, he sees ocean.

Sunlight. true blue water.

Li stands at the shore.

Blue jacket.

Smiling at him.

Not dream-smile.

Real-world smile.

Feedback ends.

He gasps, stepping back.

Not hallucination.

Real memory.

Li was not a construct.

She was — a living person.

His throat tightens.

He grips the lamp.

“…You lived.”

The light flickers.

Not random.

Response.

He breathes in.

Holds it.

“Don’t fear, Li. i am not leaving you here.”

The world shakes.

The dream’s architecture shifts.

Distant distortion screams:

“…Go back … go back … go back …”

Not one voice.

Many.

The dream retaliates —

It realizes “this human is trying to extract something.”

The space tears.

White sheeting falls away in slabs — revealing abyss beneath.

The lamp trembles in his hand.

Light weakening.

Lin Yuan clenches his teeth.

“Don’t go out.”

The whole plane tilts — he falls into the abyss.

Noise storms rise.

The dream wants to swallow him whole.

But inside the storm — a breath.

Li’s breath.

She is at the deepest point.

Not phantom.

Not duplicate.

Real.

Lin Yuan shuts his eyes, tells the darkness:

“I’ll find you.”

Darkness swallows him.

But the lamp in his hand — still flickers.
