Morning light pierced through the heavy clouds, spilling over the outer walls of the research center.

The gray-white building looked lifeless under the sun—cold, silent, clinical.

Han Zhekai stood at the end of the corridor, a cup of coffee cooling in his hand.

The indicator for the briefing blinked on his earpiece, but he didn’t connect.

The main monitor still displayed the final frame from last night—

that lamp.

He closed his eyes, exhaled slowly.

“And his body?”

“Still here. But the neural activity is… minimal. You can see for yourself.”

Han Zhekai turned, walking down the corridor. The light stretched beneath his feet—like he was walking on a cut-up dream.

Inside the medical bay, Lin Yuan lay still.

He whispered, “Still dreaming…”

Footsteps approached.

A girl stepped out from the fog—

silver-gray hair spilling past her shoulders, eyes glowing softly,

the same glow as that lamp.

“You finally made it,” she said, voice light enough to be carried away by the wind.

“Where am I?”

“This is your dream,” she said calmly. “And the place I died.”

Lin Yuan froze. “Who are you?”

“My name doesn’t matter anymore,” she murmured, staring at the light cupped in her hand. “But you used to call me—Li.”

The name hit him like a nail through his chest.

A flash of memory—rain, streetlights, a figure turning away.

“Li…” he echoed.

“There’s no time,” she said, looking toward the floating city above them.

“They’ve already started tracking you.”

“Who?”

She didn’t answer—only reached out her hand.

“Come with me.”

Her fingers were ice-cold. Real, somehow.

He hesitated… then took her hand.

Light and shadow exploded around them.

The city shattered, the sky split open.

They fell.

In the darkness, her voice whispered against his ear:

“Don’t look back. The dream will eat you alive.”

Reality.

“Dream frequency spike! It’s breaching the safety limit!”

“What?! That’s impossible—no input stimulus!”

Dr. Su leaned over the console, eyes narrowing.

The data pattern wasn’t random.

It pulsed like something else was talking back.

“This isn’t a dreamwave,” she said quietly.

“It’s… resonance.”

“Resonance?”

“Someone’s responding from inside the dream.”

Han Zhekai froze. “You mean—he’s not alone?”

No answer. The doctor typed a sequence, activating a live projection.

The dream image came into focus—

a city turned upside down, ruins, light, mist—

and two silhouettes holding hands, running toward a fracture in the sky.

“Record everything,” Su ordered.

Han’s heart hammered.

It didn’t look like a recording.

It looked like a window.

The Dream — Second Layer.

Lin Yuan fell hard onto the ground.

The air here felt like frozen glass.

Li knelt beside him. “You’re alive. Good.”

“Where is this?”

“The second layer,” she said, gazing at a distant mirror-like tower.

“Every dream holds a piece of someone’s unfinished memory.

You find the exit—or it consumes you.”

“And you?”

She smiled faintly, sadness threading through.

“I’ve already been consumed once.”

She raised her hand. The lamp in her palm reignited.

Soft light spilled across her face,

and for a moment, dream and reality became one.

“Li…” he whispered. “Are you really here?”

She turned, eyes deep as time itself.

“I’ve always been here. You just forgot.”

The light flared.

The dream-wind rose.

Reality.

“Heart rate dropping—no, synchronizing!”

Dr. Su’s voice sharpened. “He’s not dreaming anymore.

He’s connecting.”

“With who?”

“Another consciousness.”

The Dream.

Li suddenly stopped walking.

The mirror tower rippled—

as if someone were watching from the other side.

“They can see us now,” she whispered.

“Who?” Lin Yuan asked.

She smiled softly, voice barely audible—

“The ones who are still awake.”

Morning.

The air smelled of rain and static.

Outside, the streets gleamed like washed memories.

Lin Yuan stared at the mirror.

Steam veiled his reflection—sometimes clear, sometimes fractured.

In his eyes lingered the ghost of a lamp and a whisper too soft to forget.

He mouthed the name: “Li.”

His reflection mouthed it too, soundlessly.

The desk terminal glowed faintly—

recording dream data, showing a seventeen-minute stable link.

He’d gone deeper than ever before.

Too deep.

He dressed and left the dorm.

The hallway lights flickered—mimicking dream rhythms.

Outside, the city was still half-asleep.

Half-awake.

The Dream Research Center loomed five kilometers away.

He rode through shifting streets, memories flickering like holograms.

As he passed the old district, something caught his eye—

an abandoned projection tower.

At its top, a broken streetlamp blinked weakly.

Same rhythm as that lamp.

He stopped.

Heart syncing to its pulse.

The terminal buzzed:

[Dr. Su requests immediate report.]

He exhaled and started moving again.

The lab was as cold as ever.

Glass walls, pale lights, fragments of dreams floating like dust.

“You’re ten minutes late,” Han said from the end of the hall,

dark circles heavy beneath his eyes.

“The interference index doubled last night.”

“I know,” Lin Yuan said quietly.

“What did you see?”

“Her.”

“The same girl?”

“She was still standing under the light.”

“You sure she’s not just your projection? You haven’t slept properly in three weeks.”

No answer.

He connected his terminal to the system.

Code and waveforms danced on the screen—until they formed an image.

A floating city. Ruins. Light.

“You see it now?” he said.

Han leaned closer, heartbeat quickening.

At the center—

a girl with silver-gray hair, one hand holding a lamp,

the other reaching outward.

“This isn’t a recording,” Lin Yuan said.

“It’s live.”

“What?! That’s impossible—dream signals can’t sync in real time!”

The lights flickered.

The air thickened—almost humming.

On the screen, Li looked straight at him.

Her lips moved, calling his name.

But the sound couldn’t cross the barrier—only silence trembling between them.

“Yuan!” Han shouted, lunging toward the console.

The screen zoomed in on its own—

the lamp filling the frame,

a thin crack running through the glass.

Beyond it—

an entire ocean of dreams.

And within that ocean—

another him, standing beside Li.

Same place. Same pose.

Only his eyes were empty.

Han cursed. “Shit—feedback inversion!”

He yanked the cable free.

The screen went black.

Only the sound of breathing remained.

“Don’t go back in,” Han warned.

“One more dive and the system will classify you as unstable.”

Lin Yuan looked up.

“You really think I’m still awake?”

Minutes later, Dr. Su entered the room.

Her lab coat gleamed white under the lights.

“I saw your records,” she said. “That signal’s corrupted.”

“She appeared,” Lin Yuan said.

“That’s not ‘her.’” The doctor’s voice was cool.

“It’s the dream reconstructing itself. Observed data creates projections.”

“But she remembered me.”

The doctor paused, fingers freezing mid-air.

“Dreams don’t remember,” she said softly. “They overwrite.”

“Then why did she say my name?”

Su Yanzhi met his eyes.

“Maybe,” she said, “because you remembered her first.”

Silence.

Something invisible tore inside him—

a thin rip between dream and waking.

Night fell again.

He lay on his bed.

The terminal light blinked softly,

like the echo of a lamp behind his eyelids.

“I’m just dreaming,” he whispered.

But then—

A voice, gentle, familiar.

“Yuan.”

He opened his eyes.

Through the window fog—

a faint, trembling light.

That lamp.

Glowing once more.
