Evelyn's personal history, as described in a recent interview with Ashley Ross of AVCom Media, is one of remarkable strength, unshakeable faith, and deep devotion to assisting others. Her book, "Phoenix Rising," is proof of her walk through extraordinary personal struggles, such as nearly dying as an infant, numerous brain surgeries, and living with epilepsy. Evelyn's story is a strong message of hope and recovery for individuals struggling with trauma, chronic illness, and finding meaning.
Evelyn started life with an infant near-death experience, preconditioning her existence to be beset by important health issues throughout. Her Christianity, gained young through Catholic grade school and attendance at weekly masses, served as a pillar to her resilience. Evelyn speaks about visions of Christ and an internal spiritual connection which carried her over the bleakest times. "It wasn't for Jesus," she claims, "there's no way I could have survived." Even a cross she clutched while undergoing brain surgery survived a house fire, adding to her belief in divine intervention.
One critical event in Evelyn's life was her brain surgery, an experience that she believes saved her life but also posed enormous difficulties. After the operation, she needed to learn elementary skills over again, such as reading, writing, and even identifying familiar items. Without access to formal rehabilitation facilities for lack of insurance coverage, Evelyn learned to depend on her children and the neighborhood children. She made the relearning process a game by letting children instruct her, creating a feeling of normalcy and respect.
Evelyn's existence has been characterized by emotional trauma, especially from familial relationships. She sought comfort and therapy in her job. Away from the family drama and surrounded by normal people, there was a sense of normalcy. She was emotionally drained and mentally traumatized. Evelyn's experiences also prepared her with a special insight into people with disabilities, resulting in possibilities to work and assist them. Her capacity to relate to those with mental and physical illness made her a gem in several settings of care.
Evelyn is an ardent champion of epilepsy awareness. She shares the misconceptions and prejudices of people with epilepsy, such as the absence of proper medical understanding and the stigma of the disease. She hopes that her book will alter people's perceptions of epilepsy and encourage others who have similar issues. She points to the perilous trend of seizure misdiagnosis as drug overdose, which results in inappropriate treatment with Narcan, further worsening the condition of epileptic patients.
Evelyn explores the difficult subject of forgiveness, especially regarding her relationship with her mother. She encourages others who are having trouble making peace with their past to put their experiences into writing, saying that writing can be therapeutic and release repressed emotions. Forgiveness of others is essential, but Evelyn insists that forgiveness mainly pertains to healing oneself.
In the future, Evelyn sees beginning a relearning center for individuals with epilepsy and brain damage. Such a center would offer a stimulating and supportive atmosphere where individuals could rebuild skills and become independent again. Her own experience and knowledge would be a huge asset in developing a successful and effective program.
Evelyn's story is a poignant reminder of the resilience of the human spirit, the power of faith, and the healing power of helping other people. Her path from trauma to victory is an inspiration to anyone who is going through difficulties, providing a beacon of hope and affirmation of the strength of the human spirit.
Evelyn would like to extend her heartfelt thanks to Dave for his generous support and encouragement throughout her publishing journey.
“I need to thank Dave for helping me sponsoring my book. He heard my life history and was very moved of my life. He told me he wants to sponsor my book to be published so other people can read my book. He said my book will inspire, move, and educate the readers. Dave is a wonderful person who gave me his opinions of each chapter that I wrote. I listened to his opinions and we talked about them. I then took into consideration his opinions and made changes to the chapters if I agreed with him. Thank you Dave for your support.”
