The morning had started like every other had, but yet it was different.
I was excited to be going on my first ever trip to Disney World. I was 10 and in 5th grade. It was early October and I would be on a four day getaway with my grandparents. I almost didn't get to go though.
A few days prior I had been rushing to get work done. I was failing ELA because of mind maps. Mind maps are these boring assignments where you have to read a chapter of a book, then write down details from the story on their own separate lines, and finally add color and pictures. They took forever and I absolutely hate them. I had forgotten to do a LOT of them, and it was severely bringing my grade down. I had to do mind maps all the way from the 1st chapter of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, and we had already finished the book. Our story starts a week earlier, October 5th, 2023. My parents had just found out about my grade, and they were NOT happy.
"You can't go to Disney World with your grandparents if your grade is that low. You need to do your work in order to go." After I heard that, my happiness shattered. I was so close, but yet so far. I immediately ran upstairs. If I wanted to go, I needed to get these mind maps done pronto.
The reading overall wasn't hard. It was actually kind of fun. I was enveloped in the endless world of Greek gods, demigods, heroes, and monsters. It was awesome. I finished the reading and began the mind maps. Now, if you didn't know, there was usually a circle in the middle of the paper with the chapter. Then there were four branches labeled 'Characters', 'Setting', 'Plot', And lastly 'Key Details'. The thing that made the mind maps so challenging is that there normally wasn't a new character or setting in the chapter, but we couldn't leave the lines blank. It usually took me an hour just to do one mind map.
I worked for days and days, but just couldn't finish them in time. I was bummed. I wasn't allowed to go to Disney without them done.
"We can't take you to Disney if your work isn't done." My grandma told me. "Work comes before fun." Somehow, that only made me feel worse. When I was upstairs that night, I cried before I went to bed. My journal with my Disney bucket list sat forgotten on the floor. It was killing me that something that my sisters got to do when they were ten, that was tradition, my late birthday celebration, and I'd been waiting for months to do, wasn't going to happen. I went to bed that night, defeated.
The next morning when I woke up was the day before Disney. My grandparents were planning to go home two days from then. I sat at the table and ate cereal like normal.
"Catie." My dad started.
"What?" I asked solemnly
"Do you promise to do your work if you go?" That had gotten my hopes up. There was still a chance?
"Yes!" I practically screamed I was so excited.
"Then you may go." He barely got to finish his sentence before I ran upstairs, eager to pack. After I packed my suitcase I spent my day chilling before I got to go.
Disney? One of the best experiences ever. It was lively and fun. I did get my grade up, and ended the school year with a B in ELA. Moral of the story? Make sure to get your work done on time. 53Please respect copyright.PENANAo6Ax3jLWqk
