Disagree? Feel free to, but let me explain why, in my opinion, characters outshine the plot every single time. What are your favourite movies, TV shows or books? Think about it, would you like it as much if there wasn’t at least one character in that you are rooting for? The characteristics, traits and background of the main character/s are what draws people into the story itself. The setting and plot then follows, as well as the stakes and conflict, which ALL revolves around the main character/s and the choices they have to make.

Let me give some examples: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Arrow, and these are just DC Comics superheroes. How many movies, TV shows, animations, video games, even merchandise are created yearly just off all of these? What about Marvel; Spiderman, X-Men, Avengers, Deadpool, Fantastic Four- same story, so do I need to continue? I’ll continue anyway, making my point is always fun. If you’re not a superhero or comic fan, there’s Harry Potter, James Bond, Jason Bourne, John Wick, Indiana Jones, Luke Skywalker, Optimus Prime as well. All covering a wide range of genres.

See? Now think of the best stories you’ve ever read or seen. I’ll share mine, Four Brothers starring Mark Wahlberg, Tyrese Gibson and Andre 3000. Awesome story about four brothers who find out their mother was killed so they set out to find the killer. I Am Legend, a more popular film with Will Smith, and the story slaps. Others include Bruce Almighty starring Jim Carey, Get Rich or Die Trying starring 50 Cent, Notorious, an adaption of the life of The Notorious BIG, Shooter starring Mark Wahlberg and The Italian Job starring Jason Statham. What they all have in common is that the plot is intriguing, great movies to watch, but they can never have the longevity of a compelling character.
I mentioned some big names there, and if you think about it (because I just did) actors like Mark Wahlberg, Jim Carey, Jason Statham, Denzel Washington, The Rock, Kevin Hart, are all just playing a version of themselves. That being said, it can also be seen as character-driven, because let’s be honest, if you hear those names will be starring in a new movie, you rush to go see it.
