Oliver approached Jasper’s office. Ran stood up straight outside the door, looking like some sort of secret service agent. All he needed was a bluetooth in his ear. Oliver barely acknowledged him as we walked in with spinning thoughts. Which issue to address first?
Jasper looked up from his laptop at his desk, which was placed next to his computer. “What is it? I’m busy.”
Oliver doubted that, but kept the thought to himself. “What’s this I’m hearing about Jyri being driver?”
“The driver quit after badmouthing my managing techniques.” Jasper let out a groan as he rubbed his temples. “Do people not understand how difficult it is, bossing everyone around? I am under so much stress here.”
“Jyri doesn’t have a driver’s license.”
“So?”
Did it really need to be said? Oliver took a deep breath. “So, can’t you get someone else to replace him? Someone with a driver’s license?”
“Everyone else is busy.”
“I need Jyri to help me. It’s too much work on my own.
“He’ll still help you when he’s not driving.”
“Can’t you get one of the shippers to do it?” They should do it anyway, given delivering was similar enough to shipping.
“We only have one shipper, and he’s too busy to go off driving around.”
Oliver frowned. He knew Jasper never paid attention to the warehouse workers, but surely he had met all twelve of them and knew their roles. “We have two shippers.”
Jasper shook his head, and sighed. “One of them quit after I yelled at the driver for quitting.”
Oliver chewed his lip, recalling how many times he’d walk by the two shippers to see them doing about as much work as Jyri. He couldn’t imagine the one guy on his own had too much to do. They were a small company of less than thirty employees. It wasn’t as though they had hundreds of orders to ship every day. An average of twenty a day, would be his guess. And it wasn’t as though it took more than five minutes to throw things in a box and make a Fedex label.
He did the math. Shipping probably did less than two hours worth of actual work a day. “I think he can handle the driving.”
“I have him doing something else. No, Jyri does the driving.”
“Why can’t Jyri do what he’s doing, and he can do the driving?”
“Because Jyri doesn’t know how to do the thing he’s doing.”
Oliver stared, open-mouthed.
“Now, are you done questioning the way I run this place? Or are you going to quit on me too?”
The offer to quit was tempting, but Oliver had bills to pay. Speaking of bills... He cleared his throat. “There’s another thing I need to talk to you about.”
“What?”
“We owe PCB World about $276. They’re not releasing any orders for us until we pay.”
“Nonsense. We don’t have to pay them for thirty days.”
“It’s been over thirty days. The bill was due last week.” Oliver handed over the invoice.
Jasper made a show of rolling his eyes and huffing as he looked over the invoice. “Fine, fine.” He pulled out his wallet and handed over a credit card. “Call them up, pay it off. Now are you done harassing me?”
“Yeah.”
“Good.” Jasper returned to his laptop. “Now leave.”

Oliver left Jasper’s office, and went straight to Jyri’s cubicle. Jyri sat with his elbows on his desk, hands buried in his hair. He looked up at Oliver with fearful eyes. “What’d he say? Do I still have to drive?”
“I tried talking sense to him, but he wouldn’t listen.”
“But I don’t know how to drive!” Jyri wailed.
Shawn walked in on them. He glanced at Oliver, then Jyri, then Oliver again.
“Jasper wants Jyri to be the new driver,” Oliver explained.
Shawn tilted his head back, and laughed. Oliver and Jyri watched as he fell to his knees, clutching his chest as he howled with laughter.
Faye came over to investigate. “What’s so funny?”
Shawn pointed at Jyri, laughing too hard to speak.
“Jyri’s our new driver,” Oliver said.
“But Jyri doesn’t know how to drive,” Faye said.
Shawn let out another guffaw at her words. He stopped to wipe tears from his eyes.
“Jyri’s gonna have to learn.” Oliver had no idea how that would work out, but it was looking like their only solution.
“Can you teach me?” Jyri clasped his hands with pleading eyes.
There were a million things Oliver would rather do. And Jyri’s plead made Shawn laugh some more. It wasn't long before Tyler, Jessica, and a few other coworkers showed up. Probably to see what all the laughing was about.
“Sure,” Oliver said quickly.
“Thank you so much!”
“What’s going on?” Tyler asked.
“Yu-roo’s our new driver,” Craig said from his cubicle.
Shawn’s laughter subsided as he got back to his feet.
“I thought you couldn’t drive,” Jessica said to Jyri.
“I can’t."
Jessica pursed her lips. “Does Jasper know this?”
“Yes! But he won’t listen.”
“I tried reasoning with him myself,” Oliver said. “He won’t budge on it.”
Brittney walked onto the scene, eyes sweeping through the watchful crowd. “What’d I miss?”
“Jasper making Jyri our new driver.” Shawn covered his mouth with his fist.
“You’re full of shit.” Brittney looked over at Jyri with raised eyebrows.
“It’s true,” Jyri confirmed. “Even after I told him I can’t drive.”
“He made you our driver knowing you don’t have a license?”
“Yes!”
“No way. There’s gotta be some sort of misunderstanding,” Brittney said. “I’ll go talk to him.”
The crowd dispersed, shaking their heads and muttering. Leaving Oliver and Jyri alone once more.
“We need to get your permit first,” Oliver said, lowering his voice so Craig couldn’t overhear. “Knowing your mysterious life, I’m assuming you have no birth certificate or social security card or ID of any kind.”
Jyri smiled awkwardly. “How’d you guess?”
“How’d you get hired without any documentation?”
“No one asked for it.”
Oliver had a million questions about that, most of them for Brittney. He also couldn’t imagine navigating life without an ID of some kind. “How are you going without a bank account?”
“Cashing out my checks. Brittney took me and Faye to get these prepaid card things to load the money onto.”
“Great. Just great.” Oliver raked a hand through his hair, deep in thought. How could Jyri be the company driver, without a license? How could he get a license, without a permit? How could he get a permit, without documentation of any kind? What would happen if police pulled him over and he had nothing to show them?
Shawn popped up from nowhere, causing the two to jump.
“Where’d you come from?” Oliver asked. He thought Shawn had followed the crowd back to his desk.
Shawn ignored him, and moved in on Jyri. “What about the country you’re from. Can you get a birth certificate from them?”
“No.”
A grin grew on Shawn’s face. “You admit, you’re from another country.”
“Yes.”
“I thought you were in a cult.”
“Yes.” Jyri studied his nails. “I was in a cult in another country.”
“What country?”
“One that doesn’t give out birth certificates.”
Shawn scoffed. “What country doesn’t do that?”
“Am I able to get this permit?” Jyri asked Oliver. “I’ve already looked into getting documentation and IDs and things, but it’s impossible.”
Oliver did not want to even attempt to help Jyri get the papers he needed any more than he wanted to teach him to drive. “How about this. You drive really, really carefully and never get in an accident or pulled over.”
“I’ll do my best”
“This is a terrible idea,” Shawn said. “Absolutely terrible. There’s no way this won’t backfire.”30Please respect copyright.PENANAv8Zv86V7V3
