Forgiveness can be a very hard thing to talk about. You may ask yourself, “How can I forgive this person?” or even think, “I’ll never forgive them.”
Though forgiveness may feel impossible, it’s not. It is possible with the Lord’s help. Today, I’m going to share the tips that God gave me — things that helped me learn how to forgive. He helped me see and understand how I could do this.
Many times, I cried out, “Lord, I can still feel the pain. How am I going to forgive them?” But miraculously, He helped me.
I want you all to think about God — God who came down, wrapped Himself in flesh, and became a servant. In Isaiah 53:4 (KJV), it says, “Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.” He came to feel what we were feeling.
Before He was crucified, He was beaten, a crown of thorns was placed on His head, and He was crucified by His own creation. And on the cross, He still said, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” Jesus could have destroyed them right then, but He chose to forgive.
When we are trying to forgive people, we must ask the Lord for help, just as I mentioned earlier. Say: “Lord, please help me forgive. I can’t do this on my own. I want to listen. I want to obey You. I need to forgive them because You said I must. I’m in pain right now and I don’t know how to forgive them.” Ask Him this with an open heart.
The Lord said we have to forgive, or He will not forgive us (Mathew 6: 14–15). Some may say — or even our flesh may think — “Wow, those people hurt me so badly, and You want me to just forgive them? And You won’t forgive me if I don’t?” But remember: the Lord forgave us when we were hurting Him, when we were in our sin. He knew all the dirty, shameful things we did, but He still said, “Child, you are far from Me. Repent, and I will save you.” That’s the Lord’s character.
He sees the things we do and how our sins separate us from Him, but He still says, “Child, come to Me. Repent. Please, repent — and you can come into the kingdom.”
Another thing that can help us forgive is putting whatever has happened into His hands and letting Him deal with our enemies. Those are such comforting words. Romans 12:19 (KJV) says, “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.” Put it in His hands, forgive them, and let God deal with them. The Lord may not deal with them that day, or even that year, but if He said He will deal with your enemies, then He will.
God is really trying to help us. He understands our pain and knows when we’ve been crushed to the core. I want to share with you a journal entry I wrote while I was learning about forgiveness:
Journal Entry — July 16, 2025 (10 a.m.)
Have charity through the good, the bad, and the ugly. Did God not forgive us for our dirty deeds against Him? It seems as though God is showing me myself and helping me see that forgiveness can be easier — or at least not as hard — as we often make it. And if that doesn’t help me see, I think about Jesus, our Savior, who was hated among men (His creation). On the cross, He said, “Forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Can we forgive and be like Jesus? I sit here wondering, trying to change my heart posture about some of the things that were done to me. I think I have forgiven, but the scars are still there. Have I given God my scars? Have I given Him my burdens? Is He not the healer of the broken heart? So, I hope this helps — whether you are struggling with forgiveness or simply with a broken heart. Maybe unforgiveness really is just that: a broken heart.
Just know that you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you (Philippians 4:13). Don’t lose hope. Hold on to Jesus, seek Him, and He will help you.
