We really need to talk about health, because living in California — or the United States in general — can be deadly.
Now, I’m sure you’re wondering why I’m using the word “deadly.” It’s because it feels as if our society is trying to kill us slowly — through the food, the media, the air, the water, and more.
Do you have the willpower to change? Do you have the strength to change what you eat and say, “Nope, I’m not going to eat that, because it’s going to hurt my body.”
If you live in the United States, and California specifically, you know that it’s a very toxic environment — mentally, physically, and even spiritually.
I’m a believer in the Lord, and in my faith, even what we eat should honor Him. We are the temple of the Holy Spirit. By consuming food that clouds our mind or harms our body, we’re essentially dishonoring God. I’ve been learning this deeply since 2023.
At one point, I told myself: “Okay, I need to stop eating sugar. I need to stop eating all this stuff.” I really began cutting back. What surprised me was that every time I went back to it, there was massive consequences.
For example, I cut out beef for a while. Then one day, I decided to eat meatloaf. The reaction was so bad I felt like I had food poisoning. I didn’t actually have food poisoning, but that’s how my stomach reacted. The ground beef being sold to us has other things mixed in. That’s when I said, “Okay, I can no longer eat beef.”
Another example: whenever I ate ice cream or consumed cow’s milk, I would almost always end up with a cold. I even ordered a Frappuccino at Coffee Bean and asked for oat milk — twice — and still got sick. The same thing happened with some oat milk brands we bought for home. Just a sip made my throat hurt. Now, I’m not saying oat milk itself is bad, I’ve made it from scratch and was not affected in the same way. But I do believe some brands may be adding cow’s milk or cross-contaminating. The dairy products I can tolerate are Greek Gods yogurt (with active cultures), goat’s milk, and Handel’s ice cream.
Sugar was another struggle. I used to love it, but whenever I ate cake or cookies, my teeth would hurt and I’d get brain fog. Now, I mostly stick to natural alternatives like honey, dates, coconut sugar, or pure organic maple syrup (without high-fructose corn syrup).
So, you may be asking: “What do I eat if everything is bad?” The truth is, you can eat anything you want — as long as it doesn’t harm your body. You can have a burger, but ask yourself: where did the meat come from? Was it raised with antibiotics? Is it genetically modified? You can have something sweet, but how does your body feel afterward? There are alternatives to refined sugar.
I highly recommend finding local farmers’ markets with the best produce. In my town, we only have one, and it’s about a 15-minute drive — but it’s worth it. You can also start growing your own food. For example, you can start a hydroponic garden (Indoors Garden) or start planning to have a farm to raise your animals or grow fruits & vegetables.
Society has convinced us that we can’t live without these harmful things, but the truth is — we can. I’m not saying change will happen overnight, nor am I giving you an excuse not to try. At the end of the day, it comes down to this: Do you want to live, or do you want to die? Do you want to breathe freely again? Do you want to run again? Ask yourself that.
Then, if your answer is yes, take it to the Lord and ask for His help. You’re going to need it. I still struggle some days with resisting food I know will harm my body. But with God’s help, we can overcome it.
