Sarah Pennsworth frowned at her torn pinafore. She knew she oughtn’t to have clambered up that apple tree in it; if she hadn’t, she would never have toppled down and scratched both her dress and her beautiful pinafore.
“Oh no, it’s ruined!” she wailed. “Mother will be absolutely furious! I knew it, I knew I shouldn’t have climbed the apple tree in this, I’m such a daft and foolish girl!”
Then, a notion sprang to her mind. A most splendid notion!60Please respect copyright.PENANAymS8YoppDT
She gently folded the thorn-snagged pinafore into her little kit-bag.
“Pack up your troubles in your old kit-bag, and smile, smile, smile! While you’ve a lucifer to light your fag, smile boys, that’s the style. What’s the use of worrying? It never was worthwhile! So, pack up your troubles in your old kit-bag, and smile, smile, smile! Pack up your troubles in your old kit-bag, and smile, smile, smile! While you’ve a lucifer to light your fag, smile boys, that’s the style. What’s the use of worrying? It never was worthwhile! So, pack up your troubles in your old kit-bag, and smile, smile, smile!” Sarah sang at the very top of her voice.
Sarah adored that song. Her grandmother, Virginia Addington, used to croon it to her whenever she felt cross, upset, or out of sorts.
It was Grandmother Virginia who had given her the kit-bag. She had said that if one sang this song to it and placed one’s “worries” inside, something magical would ensue.
And then, plop! A twinkle of light danced across her fingers!60Please respect copyright.PENANAlrr3loPmcV
When she peered inside, the dress had transformed into a sparkling princess gown, adorned with tiny stars and embroidered flowers.
Sarah beamed.
“My kit-bag has worked its magic again, hurrah!”
She twirled about in her dazzling princess gown, the stars and flowers catching the sunlight as she laughed with sheer delight, feeling as light as a feather.
“Come along, come along chaps!” she called. Her friends had been waiting at the garden gate.
They raced, spun, played tag, and pretended to be princesses and knights. Every jump and twirl made the gown shimmer ever so more. The air was filled with the bright, joyful laughter of Sarah and her friends.
As the sun dipped low, Sarah whispered to her kit-bag, “Thank you for turning my worries into magic.”
Her friends embraced her, and together they skipped, danced, and giggled, knowing full well that even a little tumble or a torn pinafore could lead to sparkling adventures60Please respect copyright.PENANAA8CuqejFqE
