I get out of the bathroom after a hot bath- in my own bl**d; Ugh! Periods, why do we have to get them, and why did I get mine for the second time this month? Must have something to do with the drug. Oh well, I can worry about that later. As I walk out the door, an announcement comes on the speaker.
“All RESEARCHERS HEAD TO THE THRONE ROOM IMMEDIATELY!”
I look toward the boys in surprise. What could the king need now? Kai, Ray, and Ty walk towards me.
“Hey, Isha, got any idea what's going on?” Ty asks with a slight look of concern on his face.
“No, I don’t have the slightest idea, let's just get to the throne room as quickly as we can.” The boys look at each other and nod their heads in unison. We all head over to the throne room, where the girls are standing in front of the King, Queen, and Raj, and we join them.
“All right, as you all know, you are here to help create a cure for the growing illness, Hirocrominia. This illness has already affected some of our people; the first few people being Audrey Badh, Gregory Crackcoraly, and Robert Whenstifine,” the king says with a slight hint of satisfaction
My heart drops. My little Audrey, my little angel of a sister, has been given a gift from Satan himself. As I worry about Audrey, a yell pierces the room.
“NO!” I turn to see Evalyn on the ground crying, and next to her is Raymond with a sacred and shocked look on his face.
“Bro, my brother,” Raymond mumbles, tears streaming down his face.
“Yes, I do realize it is your relatives coincidentally, but this is no time to be angry or sad; this is a moment of joy, as of now, you’ll have real subjects to test your findings on.” The King says with not a hint of regret in his voice, I crank my head towards him,
“WHAT! Are you crazy?” I yell, my blood boiling. Kai walks towards me,
“Isha, calm down, I’m sure he didn’t mean it like that,” Kai says, worried.
“Oh no, I know what he meant. I heard him loud and clear. I don’t think you heard him, Kai. HE WANTS US TO TREAT OUR FAMILIES LIKE LAB RATS!” I take a step and pause, and move to the middle of the room, right under the chandelier, for everyone, including the servants, to hear.
“YOU ARE CRAZY! I CAN’T BELIEVE SOMEONE LIKE YOU IS OUR KING, A KING WOULD NEVER, EVER TELL SOMEONE TO USE THEIR OWN FAMILY AS A LAB RAT!”
“Oh, little Isha, they're not lab rats, think of them as heroes, giving back to the country.”
“Oh, Fu*k the country,” I shoot back, tears now streaming down my cheeks.
“Hmm? What was that?” The king responds in an annoyingly smug tone.
“Father, please. You’re taking it too far.” Raj says pleadingly.
“Oh, I’m taking it too far? That is absurd! You're the one who-”
“CREAKKKKKK!” We all look up to see what made that sound. It’s the chandelier, swinging violently, and before I can move, it breaks.
I stand there frozen, but before the chandelier hits me, Kai runs and pushes me out of the way, and the chandelier crushes him. I sit there on the ground staring at what just unfolded. Bl**d seeps from under the chandelier, bl**d, real bl**d. Kai is dead, he's gone, and he's gone because of me. The room is quiet, with tears streaming down my face, along with my friends. The King and Queen sat there quietly, eyes widened in shock. Raj’s face is turned, but I can see the horror in his body language. After a few minutes of silence, Theo runs towards me and helps me up. He and the other guards quietly escort us to our rooms.
I enter our–my room. All of Kai’s things have already been cleared out. But I don’t think much of it, because now, Kai is gone, I jump on our- my bed and lay there, thinking what if, what if I didn’t stand there out of anger, what if I moved quickly enough, what if I didn't let my anger consume me.
“THE ONLY REASON HE’S GONE IS BECAUSE OF ME,” I yell into my pillow, my anger draining into sadness, as I lay there I cry myself to sleep.
