“I see…I wasn’t expecting such a sudden escalation during your first few hours in town.” Evra solemnly stated, staring at her laptop screen as she sat on her blue living room couch. “And there’s now been a confirmed death to add to it. Plus what he told you all…”
Evra leaned back as she exhaled sharply, shaking her head. “If I had known this was going to happen…”
“There’s nothing you could have done.” Amara stated, sitting in the center of the camera, with Joren, Nia, and Lucien standing behind her but still in shot of the camera. “You didn’t receive the request until last night.”
Nia cleared her throat. “However…I do have a question. Do you know of a power that Nathan is alluding to? One that can make everyone forget about you? Even make a wedding ring disappear?”
Evra was silent before nodding. “Yeah, though there’s only one group who could perform such a feat.”
“A group?”
“Yeah, your superiors on the council. There’s a power that requires such extensive power that it requires all five council members to band together to cast it. Essentially: it’s a power that erases one’s existence. Only a select few even know of its existence, much less how to perform the cast.”
“Is it okay for you to be telling us this if it’s so confidential?”
Evra nodded. “It directly pertains to your investigation, so there shouldn’t be a problem. I’ll take full responsibility with the council if I’m wrong.”
An uncomfortable silence followed for several seconds before Joren spoke up. “Has…has that power ever been used before?”
Nia shrugged her shoulders. “I really have no idea. I only know of its existence, not the specifics or if the council has used such a power in the past. I highly doubt they’d spill the beans if I were to ask them, even with it being potentially involved in what’s happening.”
“Can’t you please ask them?!” Lucien exclaimed as he stepped forward, taking up the entire screen. “You’ll never know for sure if they’ll tell you if you don’t at least ask!”
Evra was silent as she stared at Lucien before giving him an empathetic expression, her lips curling up slightly. “What happened today must have gotten to you, hasn’t it?”
Lucien looked away, not answering. She tilted her head slightly before grinning. “Alright. I can’t promise anything, but tomorrow I’ll have Freddie look after Isla on his own for a while and request an emergency session with the council.”
Lucien weakly smiled and nodded. “Thank you!”
As Lucien stepped back, Nia spoke up. “Speaking of, how is Isla doing?”
“She’s being her usual self. After picking her up from school earlier, we came back home, helped her with her homework, and when Freddie got back, she played with him while I cooked dinner. Played some more after dinner and now Freddie’s reading her a bedtime story after getting her ready for bed. She should be going to sleep–”
“She’s already asleep.” A skinny, lanky looking man auburn, unkempt hair called from the hallway before slowly stepping into the frame. “Got about halfway through the story before she started snoring.”
Evra smiled and scooted over, making room for Freddie to sit down next to her, putting his arm around her. “I saw the news. It’s starting to make national headlines now that a rogue caster is causing terror.”
Nia sighed. “And it could only get worse from here. It’s quite obvious to us now that Nathan won’t stop until he gets revenge on the woman he believes is responsible for everything. Tomorrow, we’re supposed to meet with the mayor of the city along with the chief of police to discuss next steps.”
Freddie nodded. “Hopefully the police will actually be willing to work together with you this time.”
“Oh? You’ve heard about our run in with the chief already?”
“Nah, but that seems to usually be the case, is it not?”
Amara sighed. “I wish we could say you’re wrong…”
Evra chuckled. “Just hang in there. With all the national attention being drawn to this, I’m positive that even the chief will be more willing to work together more closely.”
Glancing down at the time, Evra nodded. “Anyways, I should let you all go for the night. You all will have a busy day ahead, and I’ll be expecting an update at the same time tomorrow.”
The four nod, with Nia giving Evra a grin. “Be sure to tell Isla I said hi and that I love her!”
Evra nodded. “I promise! Have a good night’s sleep everyone.” With that, the video call ended. Amara immediately raised her arms and stretched. “Alright you two.” She said, glaring at Joren and Lucien. “Time for you both to go back to your own hotel room. Gotta get my beauty sleep.”
Joren chuckled. “Alright alright, I’ll go. Let’s go Lucie–”
Looking to his left, he was shocked to see Lucien had already walked to the door, leaving the room without saying a word. “Beat me to it I see.” Joren chuckled. “Anyways, hope you ladies have a good night.” Joren lightly nodded and left the room, closing the door behind him. Nia glanced at the door before turning to Amara, who had walked over to the bathroom and grabbed a brush. “Did Lucien seem okay to you?”
Amara shrugged. “Who knows. He has been pretty quiet since the second incident. Honestly, it’s been more peaceful as a result.”
Nia sighed. “Amara…”
“What?” She asked, looking at Nia as she began brushing. “I’m just telling you what I think.”
Nia shook her head, annoyed. “Just…be sure to try to get along with him for the remainder of our time here. We need both of you at your best.”
“I’ll try…”
After an hour, the two of them had finished their nighttime routines and were ready for bed. As Amara turned off the lamp, plunging the room into darkness, Nia stared at the ceiling, her mind replaying the events of the day. Finally closing her eyes, she fell into a peaceful sleep, praying to the goddess for a quick, successful mission.
