Maverick
I grab my shirt about to put it on when a woman comes into my room. She kept her head down grabbing my dirty clothes and cloak, "I can do that myself" I explain watching the woman as I gestures to the pile. Wool wrap around her body in form of a dress with an enlarge fur hood the spans out pass her shoulders.
Three buns were on her head with a braid on each side as two rest on her front, right over chest. Gold bands and a long chain necklace around her neck.
"Sir Maverick, it would be rude and not practical. You are a guess of the princess. I have been ordered to. Trust me, washing other's clothing is not on my dream to-do list" she brings her head up waiting for my response.
A sigh escapes past my lips. I don't need her to. Nor want her to do this. Giving up so easily to him. Me losing. I gesture to my clothes and go back to what I was doing.
"Fine but leave the cloak and make sure to knock next time" I said letting her do what is needed. Moments later, someone else enters the room. "I said leave the cloak!" with that said, I turn around finding the princess staring at me. Realizing that my shirt was not button, I adjust the collar flaring it out more. "May I help you? Is it not a thing here to knock?” I ask placing my hand cover the wooden frame.
She places the tray of food down on the table looking around the room. Does she want something? I kept my attention of her, making she doesn't try anything. It would better if she did. She approaches the entrance but stops turning to face me "I thought you might want to eat here, I haven't seen you out much so I thought I should check on you...ya know" she makes eye contact with me. For a few seconds, she just stood there. Does she want a reaction out of me? From that night?
"And why would I need checking up on?" I ask not looking at her for a moment before continuing “if it’s about you... and... Frankly, I don't care. Thanks for the soup." I finally look at her completely. Is that what she wants to hear? The princess nods her head causally walking out with the curtain closed behind her.
Her desire. She made that clear, and it was foolish of me to think otherwise. I become the greatest fool to think beyond my past. You could say I was hopeful.
I made it somewhere, closer to her ...close to escaping. That night, where it didn't feel unbearable to be stuck with someone. Feeling the softness of her skin against my fingertips. Plays in the back of my mind constantly. Theres a chance that if she picked me, I would ruin it...
I don't care yet it hurts when it shouldn't.
I grab the bowl of soup taking a few sips letting the broth burn my top lip. Home. It reminds me of home. The colorful lanterns in the air decorating the night sky.
My brother taps the back of my arm running away from me, "You're it" he yells weaving through people. I finish eating one more of sweets pushing the rest in my pocket before running after him yelling the words "Amir, that's cheating, you said snack break!". In the distance, I could see him teasing me on my lack of speed. Without realizing, I bump in a group of Chichimec dancers apologizing "Sorry ladies. Love the dresses..." One of the dancers pinches my cheeks before walking away. I began to run in Amir's direction again only to catch up with him. People dancing around, singing and passing out food. I grab a hold of my brother and smiles "I got you".
"No fair! You always get me. I thought I really had you this time" he explains looking sad. A drunk danseur places his Jarabe Tapatío on my brother's head walking away. We both turn to him watching him fall into a barrel then back at each other.
"Mine!" I said – "No, It's mine! He gave it to me, Maverick" he explains keeping it down on his head tightly. My hands held onto the hat pulling it closer to my body while keeping his upper body down.
Our mother approaches causing us to stop and look up in her direction. Her shadow cast over us basking a warm light around her body from the festival lights. "Now what did I tell you boys about fighting? Maverick let go off it. I bought some soup for you both. Come eat" she commands walking over to the top of the hill. Her black waves overthrown the sky view letting the wind carry them. Our father sat down next mother with one arm over her shoulder. Amir follows suit sitting down next to her while I sat down next to father. He passes me a bowl of soup. Amir gets the same.

"Whatever happens on in life, You two will need each other. Fighting over little things isn't worth it" my mother speaks. As I drank my soup, I felt something being place on my head. I look over to my father, who held a big smile on his face. "Sometimes siblings need to fight. But fighting together is more important" he explains adjusting his hat on me. One of my clearest memories. We were together as family until my mother died.
I remember standing over her grave as everyone cried and weeps. Lilies her favorite flowers laid on around her stone. All I did was watch. Not a single tear fell down my face as my brother held my hand crying vigorously. From that day, I felt had to step up. Be there for papa and my brother. Regardless of the cost. I always thought when father tried to get our powers that was his way of coping. To fix the broken and make everything whole which he did...keeping her alive.
I stood up off the bed wiping my mouth and place the bowl down on the tray. The lantern in the corner light softens. Crash! Outside of my room, I gradually open the curtain and glance down at a man with long hair. He stares up at me in fear and runs away dropping a tray of partial empty goblets. I pick up the ones he drops chasing after him, but he's fast.
"Wait! You dropped this!" he makes a sharp right. I stop at the end of the hall that I thought he was in, but he was nowhere in sight.
Muttering from the room next to me seep through the door. Must be an important room to be only one of the few doors in this place. My body pushes against it leaning over the edge to see inside the room. Sloane with her mutt and a group of Eirenians, you could tell with their attire that they are important. "I told you we can't trust him. He's working with Oasis. We need to get rid of him" Kylian voice burnt my ears. Get rid of me?
"You're right. He will pay for what he has done. A monster" I should have known her being nice was an act. Is this the reason why she didn't kiss me. Must run in the family, a bunch of liars. I push my body off the wall walking away just to bump into the man that ran from me earlier. He falls down scooting to the wall pleads.
"No get away from me. Please don't kill me. What did we ever do to you to deserve this?" he hides his face. Displayed on his face were a couple scars and large black burn mark. I step forward looking down at him "What do you mean? Who are you? I have a good facial recognition of my victims "I explain in a playful manner. Another person comes along shielding him with hands out on the side, a woman
"Don't act dumb. It's Sara and Liam" she replies holding onto him. Sara and Liam? I grew up with them. We used to prank the Holy woman of our kingdom by turning the garden angels to follow them when they walk by. I haven't seen another survivor other than myself. I thought they died. Hope fills my eyes only to be drain by her words "You murdered our families, Took away our home! Get away!" she yells drawing more attention swing the blade in her hand at me. Two guards hear the commotion and run towards us.
"I didn't cause this..."I uttered stepping back out in disbelief.
She shows her arm that is covered in black veins. A shadow from my hand appears as the veins on her arm start to glow. "Are you sure about that?" she asked.
I ran down the hallway after leaving my room to retrieve all that I had left and passed by the woman that washed my clothes from earlier knocking the clothes out of her hands.
"Your clothes are ready, Sir."
"Get him!" One guard points at me.
"Not the time" I state leaving immediately. I made it outside grabbing a horse from a stable. Out of nowhere, a Eirenian slashes my side with its claws. I lift my right hand throwing it in the air with my powers. Heading straight for the entrance, the horse ran fast as it could barely missing the landing.
Run...
Keep running...
Twigs hit my body as the horse sped through the forest causing some of the snow to fall on us. The village came into view miles away. Dots started to appear as my vision became blurry. As I came in and out consciousness, figure came into view. After that I couldn't see anything. Something I am familiar with.
You should have listen to me...
