The volcano’s low growl was still rumbling through the earth when Group A regrouped inside the cracked steel doors of the Abyss Lab’s main corridor. The walls were stained with scorch marks from earlier firefights, the air thick with the tang of ozone and something chemical, sharp enough to burn the throat.
Amber swept her rifle across the shadows, voice clipped but calm.188Please respect copyright.PENANAUhIrNqV4jn
“Clear this section. We’re on the clock.”
Hydra moved ahead of the rest, giving precise hand signals. Valkyrie flanked left, Cerberus took the rear, Basilisk kept his rifle aimed forward, and Chimera was already scanning vents and ceiling lines for motion.
Amber watched him for a moment, noting the quiet authority. He wasn’t barking orders, but his team moved as if wired into the same brain.
And for the first time, she felt a small twinge of approval.
Two Levels Down
The lab opened into a wide chamber lit by cold, sterile white light. In the center stood a reinforced cylinder the size of a small truck — the container for Silent Eagle. Warning sigils and biohazard emblems painted in faded red surrounded it.
Cerberus tapped into a nearby console.188Please respect copyright.PENANAQsKEt3dxUm
“This is it. Containment seal is intact. We move it now, or the island swallows it with the volcano.”
Hydra crouched next to her, scanning the numbers.188Please respect copyright.PENANAE64pQ05FYz
“Secondary locks?”
“Triple-layer biometric,” Cerberus replied. “Give me two minutes.”
Amber gave a curt nod. “You’ve got one.”
Basilisk kept watch on the door, muttering to Chimera, “If this thing leaks, we’re dead in seconds, right?”
Chimera didn’t look up from covering the vents. “Or worse. You’d wish you were dead.”
Extraction
The locks hissed open under Cerberus’s fingers. Hydra signaled Basilisk and Valkyrie to help him secure the container into the insulated transport cradle.
Amber keyed her comm.188Please respect copyright.PENANAsCnMztHifE
“Group B, status?”
Static hissed, then Phoenix’s voice cut in: “Power facility is toast. Got enough smoke and debris to keep them blind. On route to you now.”
Griffin’s voice overlapped, “And we didn’t even blow ourselves up. Miracle.”
Azure’s dry tone followed: “Focus, children. We’re not done yet.”
Amber allowed herself the faintest smirk before turning back to Hydra.188Please respect copyright.PENANAGw19ovyB9O
“Once this is loaded, we burn everything else in here.”
File Room — The Twist
The team moved into a sealed archive chamber, the walls lined with data cores and paper files vacuum-wrapped in plastic. Most of it was tagged with cryptic project names — Black Trawl, Night Orchard, Sea Phantom.
Cerberus moved toward the indexing terminal. “Which ones do we take?”
Amber’s voice was sharp. “Anything linked to Silent Eagle.”
But Valkyrie had already pulled a thin case from the shelves, her brow furrowed. “This one… doesn’t match the rest. Code: SFD-01.”
Hydra froze mid-step. His gaze locked on the faded black letters: SERAPH FALK DRAGUNOV.
Basilisk frowned. “SFD? What the hell is that?”
Valkyrie glanced between Hydra and the file. “Looks like some kind of… subject dossier.”
