Xochitl couldn’t believe how time flew by. One day, she was preparing everything for her trip. Now she was on an airplane heading to her destination. She remembered how she prepared for everything for her trip. The night before, Xochitl got a call from the primary supervisor, who was looking forward to meeting her and mentioned that she would be staying with a family within the reservation. She would get some form of monthly payments since Xochitl decided to volunteer for a full year. It wasn’t enough as Xochitl, but she would be staying with a family who would be paid to help with utilities and other bills.
Before she accepted to volunteer, Xochitl did her research regarding the city and the reservation she was going to volunteer in. The people in the reservation were considered among the poorest in New Mexico. Xochitl knew that she would volunteer at one of the poorest places, but she was willing to have an open mind. Her two previous jobs were as a paraprofessional and an ABA therapist, which gave her experience working with children and adults from low-income backgrounds. It wasn’t easy, but Xochitl believed she could help the kids at the reservation.
Closing her laptop, Xochitl remembered that before boarding the plane, her mother had accompanied her to the airport. Of course, her mother wasn’t happy and still tried to convince her not to go, but Xochitl was determined to go. She didn’t want to face her family’s constant questioning about her personal life and dating. Also, Xochitl wanted to escape the heartbreak of finding out her ex was getting married on Christmas Day. The young woman then looked at her phone, which was on airplane mode, looked at social media, and went to her ex’s page.
He was with another woman who held up her engagement ring proudly. Xochitl wondered if her ex was going behind her back, or if he had just found the woman he wanted. Still, it hurt her that he moved on so quickly.
Xochitl wanted a distraction from her daily life and wanted to gain experience.
Closing her laptop, she looked at the window and saw the various mountains, and was excited about landing. There were only thirty minutes until she arrived at Santa Fe Airport. Xochitl looked at the person who sat next to her. It was a man with medium olive skin who had a shine. His black hair was long and put into two pigtails. He wore handmade earrings with beautiful patterns; his face was broad, and he looked like he had a well-built figure. His skin and face looked flawless, and Xochitl thought that the man could pass as a model. The man looked as if he were reading some documents. “Um, excuse me.” The man slowly turned to look at her, but didn’t speak. His eyes were black with a hint of sternness, which almost frightened her. He wore a dark green jean jacket with many types of patches, and one of them was of the U.S Marines. “S-Sorry, I-I was wondering if you were from New Mexico.”
“I am,” he answered sternly.
“G-Great. I-I was hoping you would give me advice on what to look out for. I’ve never been to New Mexico, and I would appreciate some advice.”
The mysterious man looked at her emotionlessly, and Xochitl became nervous. “Haven’t you done your research?”
“E-Excuse me?”
“You interrupted me to to get advice regarding New Mexico? Haven’t you done your research? If not, then why go?”
Xochitl was stunned. All she wanted was advice on what to look out for when landing in New Mexico. She was polite, and the mysterious man was a jerk to her. “I-I did. All I wanted was some advice since you live in the state. Sometimes researching online isn’t always the same when asking a local.”
The man looked unbothered. “I’m doing paperwork, we’re almost landing, and you want to waste my time. Didn’t you have time to ask other locals at the airport?” He looked down at his paperwork.
The young woman scoffed, couldn’t believe his nerve. She looked at the window, expecting to land soon. Xochitl then thought about Creampuff and was hoping she was doing okay.

Creampuff was in her cage screaming and whining, hoping Xochitl would hear her. “XOCHITL, HUMAN! WHERE ARE YOU!?”The Samoyed remembered the airport process and hated every moment of it. She was caged and taken away. Creampuff howled and barked for Xochitl as she was surrounded by luggage and other caged dogs.
The other dogs barked. A German Shepard snapped at Creampuff. ”Hey, fluffball! Give it a rest! Your human can’t hear you! We’re up in the air! Once we hit the the ground then we’re going to the airport to see our humans!”
Creampuff eventually stopped barking and glared at the German Shepard. “I can’t wait that long! I hate it here! I want Xochitl!”
A Labrador was next to her, huffing. “Geez, it seems that your owner got you all spoiled. You’re giving us all a headache with your yapping. C’mon, all the barking and your owner still hasn’t shown up. You have to wait like the rest of us.”
Creampuff saw that many of the dogs barked and laughed at her. She couldn’t believe that they viewed her suffering as funny. She loved Xochitl and wanted to be close to her. The Samoyed didn’t think of herself as spoiled since she wanted her owner.
“Hey, guys, knock it off. This may be her first time flying, and she is unfamiliar with the process.”
Creampuff looked at the dog who defended her. “Who are you?”
“The name is Dakota. What’s your name, beautiful?”

“Creampuff.”
The other dogs barked and laughed.“Creampuff!? Ha! She looks like a cottonball!”
“Ah, ignore them. They’re just jealous that they aren’t beautiful as you. So, this is your first time traveling?”
“Yes, I don’t like it here.”
“You’ll get used to it. My owner and I travel a lot. It’s not bad when you get used to it. Don’t worry, you’ll see your owner soon! So, is New Mexico your final destination?”
“Yeah, my owner talked about it. Never heard of it.”
“If you like being outside, then it’s the right place for you.”
Creampuff lay down and huffed.“I hope so.”
