Night hung like ink, starless and vast. A heavy mist crept silently from behind the palace walls, a slowly tightening net, soundlessly sealing away the world. I stood at the end of the corridor, gazing at the distant, untouched side hall, something deep within me stirring faintly.
The words still echoed in my mind:
"You are not alone."
But could such words truly become my solace?
I slipped out of the chamber and stepped into the thick fog. My footsteps whispered faintly against the stone pavement. I told myself this was not escape—only that I sought an answer. Perhaps only by stepping into that forbidden place would I finally see the truth behind this game of shadows.
The side hall’s door stood ajar, its weathered copper fittings dull and cold. I reached out and pushed it open with a creak. The air carried the scent of long slumber.
A figure stood by the window.
He turned slowly, eyes dark as the night, yet unable to conceal a flicker of surprise.
"You came here." His voice was calm, yet laced with something probing.
I studied him—a face both unfamiliar and faintly known. In that moment, I understood: the true story was only now beginning.
"Who are you?" My voice cut sharply through the silence.
A ghost of a smile touched his lips. "Some call me a shadow. Others, a player of games. But for you… I am the answer."
I froze. Unlike the crown prince’s arrogance, unlike the gentle protector’s warmth, he was different—a specter in the mist, emotionless yet striking straight to the heart.
"This game is not merely their struggle for power," he murmured, stepping closer. "Your existence is the unforeseen variable. And now… they have all underestimated you."
My pulse quickened.
"So you, too, wish to use me?" My voice trembled with anger and defiance.
He smiled, though something sorrowful flickered in his gaze. "I ask nothing of you. I only mean to say—when all others seek to wield you, you must learn to become the one who overturns the board."
I watched him, something within me awakening.
Perhaps I need no longer be just a player in their tale.
Perhaps I could write my own story—starting now.
