Analysis
First, the episode ends in tragedy when Gennou dies because he had no intention of destroying the Leaf Village. Instead, he was trying to recapture the feeling of treasure hunting with Naruto, a spitting image of his late son. Second, the episode highlighted the teamwork of the Genin. Last, an element of appearance versus reality showed situational irony. Other details will be mentioned in the analysis.
In the previous episode, Shikamaru told Ino and Choji that the paper bombs Gennou set out in the village were just a diversion. Therefore, Ino headed to the Hokage’s office to inform Tsunade that the paper bombs were just a diversion. In response, Tsunade said that Gennou might be planning something else since he is the trap master.
Meanwhile, Choji and Shikamaru were hanging out on a rooftop that was close to Hokage Mountain. At that moment, Shikamaru noted that Gennou might have deliberately planned for all the shinobi who were at the hidden waterfall village to come back to the Leaf Village. Moreover, he looked at Hokage Mountain and realised that Gennou planted the paper bombs inside Hokage Mountain to destroy the village, so he made plans to let Tsunade know what was happening. However, before they could go, Kiba and Rock Lee arrived to tell Shikamaru and Choji that Might Guy and the rest of the Shinobi who were at the Hidden Water Village had returned home. Afterwards, Hinata also arrived to let them know about Naruto’s disappearance. Therefore, since there was no time to go to the Hokage’s office, it was up to the genin to stop Gennou and save Naruto.
Naruto pursues Gennou to the mountains at the back of town and hears that he plans to detonate explosive tags there, burying Konoha in a massive rockslide. Gennou told Naruto that the paper bombs that were in the village were just a decoy. However, the paper bombs that were inside Hokage Mountain were real, and he planned to detonate explosive tags there, burying Konoha in a massive rockslide. It was a brilliant plan because, as Shikamaru said, no one would think of attacking the mountainside images. As a result, Naruto tries to stop Gennou, but Gennou says that even if he defeats him, the tracking advice will activate if Naruto leaves the mountain. Yet, Naruto still activated his Multi-Shadow Clone Jutsu to stop him, which resulted in Gennou tossing his various kunai at his shadow clones and eventually stabbing Naruto’s shoulder in the process. Despite being stuck in a sticky situation, Naruto had high hopes that his comrades would come to save him.

The Genin shows the value of teamwork.
Before he can do so, Naruto’s friends arrive, Hinata having informed them where he is going. They combine their efforts to prevent him from detonating tags and manage to save the village. Victory music with a mix of drums plays in the background. Various tactics were used to stop Gennou:
First, when Gennou tossed his various kunai at Naruto, Kiba arrived with his fang-over-fang technique to block his attacks.
Second, Shino traps Gennou with his insect attack that covers Gennou’s body, but Gennou uses a Substitution Jutsu to cause an explosion and switch just before being devoured by the insects.
Third, Gennou went to a cliff close to Hokage Mountain and planned to detonate a paper bomb with his kunai. However, he is stopped by Shikamaru’s Shadow Strangulation Jutsu. Choji was also present, so when he tried to get a hold of Gennou, suddenly there was a purple smokescreen, which caused Shikamaru to stop his jutsu so that Gennou could escape. Therefore, this compelled Choji to use his human boulder technique to stop him, but Gennou had already tossed a kunai on the ground with the paper bomb to detonate. However, it didn’t explode.
Fourth, Tenten, Neji, Naruto, Kiba, and Shino arrived at the area to let Gennou know that they had already disarmed the paper bomb and all the devices he had set up in the mountainside images. Afterwards, Ino, Sakura, Hinata, and Rock Lee arrived as well to let him know that it was over. However, Gennou went to another area to detonate another paper bomb with his kunai. Afterwards, he put everyone in a genjutsu, showing them an explosion of the mountain images, which caused a rockslide. Luckily, Sakura released the genjutsu.
After using the genjutsu, Gennou summoned a giant bird to escape, which compelled Ino to use her Mind Transfer Jutsu on Gennou so that he couldn’t escape. However, she felt extreme pain in Gennou’s body, which resulted in her returning to her normal body.
Gennou tries to escape, but Rock Lee stops him with his taijutsu skills. However, Gennou used a smoke screen to have the upper hand to match Lee’s taijutsu, but he was defeated and lay on the ground on his backside.
Although Gennou was defeated, the giant bird he summoned was flying in the sky with a paper bomb underneath its foot. At that moment, Gennou revealed the final part of his plan, which was that he had placed the paper bombs in the third Hokage’s face as a trigger for the explosion, and the bird was the trigger that was going to set off a string of explosions.
In response, Tenten summoned a ninja tool of bows and arrows to target the bird, but it dodged them, so they couldn’t bring it down by attacking it from long range.
As a result, Naruto goes to the third Hokage’s image and plans to destroy the bird with his Rasengan before it lands. So, he activated a shadow clone, but both fell off the cliff. Luckily, Choji saved them with his Partial Expansion Jutsu, where his huge hands saved them from falling.
Since Tenten’s arrows were ineffective against the bird, Shikamaru instructed Hinata to assist Naruto. So Hinata lands on Choji’s hands, where Hinata is to give him directions by reading the bird movements with her Byakugan. As a result, victory music plays in the background with a mix of a high-pitched Japanese guitar and electric guitar. Hinata activated her Byakugan and told Naruto to let the bird come a little closer before using the Rasengan. So, when the bird got close, he used the Rasengan, but the bird dodged it.
Therefore, Sakura distracted the bird by tossing a boulder at it. Luckily, while the bird dodged it and got distracted, Naruto, who was guided by Hinata, got close to the bed and used the Rasengan under its foot that had the paper bomb. Afterwards, the bird disappeared.
Last, when Naruto was falling from the sky, Choji saved him with his Partian Expansion Jutsu with his hands. The genin defeated Gennou.
The amount of teamwork was impeccable since everyone played a role in stopping Gennou. Despite everyone having their strengths and weaknesses, together, they proved to be fine shinobi who continued to progress as ninjas. Therefore, they are all dynamic characters who continue to learn and grow as fine shinobi.

The element of appearance versus reality shows a situational irony.
Gennou dies after saying that he wanted his son to enjoy another scavenger hunt, and the group realises that while he had initially intended to destroy Konoha because Naruto reminded him of his son, he made his traps into a scavenger hunt. Hence, Konoha was in no real danger. After the team defeats Gennou, Sakura tries to heal him with her medical jutsu, but he eventually dies because he can’t push his body further due to the old injuries he sustained in the past. Before he died, he said he didn’t get revenge but had fun. Afterwards, a picture of his grandson fell off, and Shikamaru picked it up from the ground. At the back of the picture, it read, “My son, proud as a peacock after beating me at a treasure hunt.” This means that when Gennou told Naruto that he had a grandson who looked like him when they first met, it wasn’t his grandson but his son. Therefore, it means that Naruto reminded him of his deceased son. He cared about Naruto and didn’t plan to destroy the village since Shino said throughout this whole thing that there hadn’t been one casualty in the Leaf Village. As a result, Naruto cries and even tries to awaken Gennou, but he is long gone. It’s a tragedy that he died.
After the Genin headed back to the village, Shikamaru went to the Hokage’s office to explain to Tsunade what had happened. When Shikamaru told the Hokage what happened, he revealed that Gennou had originally planned to blow up the village. But instead of destroying the village that caused the death of his son, Gennou deactivated all the bombs after meeting Naruto. Since Naruto was the spitting image of his late son, he made his traps into a treasure hunt, just like he had done with his son. Therefore, there is an element of appearance versus reality in the sense that, in appearance, Gennou seemed like a villain trying to destroy the village, but in reality, he was not a villain since he turned the situation into a treasure hunt because Naruto reminded him of his late son. Therefore, it is a situational irony where what happened, which is Gennou recapturing the feeling of treasure hunting with his son through Naruto, is the opposite of what was expected, which was that everyone expected him to destroy the village for causing the death of his son. It’s a shame that the relationship between Gennou and Naruto as grandfather and grandson is no longer there.
Towards the end of the episode, positive music plays in the background with a high-pitched Japanese flute. At Ichiraku Ramen, Shikamaru, Choji, Ino, Sakura, and Naruto were all seated, eating ramen, and Shikamaru told them about Gennou recapturing the feeling of treasure hunting with his son through Naruto, since Gennou knew he wasn’t going to live longer. In response, Naruto gets emotional and almost teary-eyed thinking about the old man. Afterwards, Naruto said to his friends that they must be ready for enemies like Orochimaru to attack them in the future, so they must be ready for anything because they must protect the village with all of them working together.
The lesson from this episode is that one might find someone who will bring them peace, just like Gennou, who found peace and no longer had a feeling to pursue his revenge for destroying the Leaf Village after meeting Naruto.
