"Ah, the sound of freedom," I exhaled dramatically, my hands rising for a big stretch. It relieved the back ache only for it to be back seconds later. This was why I had a love hate relationship with school. "Yeah, right, and what happens on Fridays?" We grabbed each other and squealed like idiots.
"Clubbing." Every Friday. Every damn Friday. We were always desperate to make up for the time we lost to studying.
So, like I do every Friday, I bowed, took her hand and pressed a kiss to it. "Your Highness, would you like to come with me to the club?" I asked in the most obnoxious accent I could come up with, barely holding back my laughter.
Farian smiled, all smug and dramatic with a hair flip.
"Hmm… do I want to come with you to the club?" She tapped her manicured finger against her chin. "For you, peasant, I will do anything."
I snorted, breaking character immediately. "Let’s go get them." My friends were definitely sitting in front of their faculty gate right now, complaining about how we science students were always busy and never get anywhere early.
I still couldn’t legally get into the club, being nineteen and all. Stupid law. I could do everything except drink. So convenient.
With my sister’s ID in hand, though? It was a breeze. Pale as day, freckles and wild ginger hair, I mean it wasn't easy to find two of those in the jungle of California. We looked alike enough to fool anyone.
"Great, let me buy our tickets." Just like every other Friday, Addy, Angel and Laurel were already at our spot, the spot that we colonised. Even with our rebellious habits and ridiculously predictable routine, we always picked the club with the highest security. We’re all 'just a girl' after all.
Expensive tickets and four broke girls, how do we afford it? Not a problem when Farian’s dad exists.
They were rich as fuck. Emphasis on the as fuck.
"Oh my God, have you seen the new boy?" Farian gushed, practically vibrating. "The transfer student?"
"Yeah, oh my gosh, he’s like a character from a dark romance novel," Angel said dreamily. Yes he does look like the textbook definition of a 'bad boy' but I shook my head instead, refusing to allow Angel to further expatiate on the poor boy.
I was a soft romance girly because absolutely nothing made sense about dark romance. What do you mean you fell in love with the person who murdered your family?
Nope, not for me.
To me, he was just… okay. Nothing special. Just another college brooding boy.
"Solange broke up with Carmen again." I gasped, my ears perking up "They break up every market day." Laurel noted.
"We need to know the reason this time around." Angel nodded in agreement "Apparently, Carmen cheated again." Laurel, Angel and I rolled our eyes in unison.
"Not again, damn it." How does she keeps going back to a serial cheater?
"Solange needs to be taken to a therapist, she needs to break free from him." it was absolutely tormenting to get hooked in a toxic relationship at eighteen. I don't think her frontal lobe was even fully developed yet.
"I call shotgun." I opened the door to the car, the leather smell hitting me immediately, yuck.
"And, it is with Mikayla." Farian continued as soon as she buckled in. My jaw almost dropped to the floor "isn't she Solange's childhood friend?" I asked.
The rest of the conversation went by in a blur, I didn't even realise we had reached Farian's house, we just somehow did, all while being loud, gosshiping and completely unaware of our surroundings, just on autodrive to our destination.
"Having a rich friend is a blessing." Addy exhaled dramatically as she plopped on the bed "Yeah, I mean which of our houses could actually fit all these clothes?" I sat beside her, voice just as dramatic.
"My house is so small it barely fits me and my family." A chuckled escaped me before I could stop it. We were not exaggerating about the difference, Farian's closet was the size of my living room.
We kept chatting while we deliberated on what to wear.
I finally settled on a lace-trimmed top with a chain belt and leather shorts that did a lot for my ass.
Yeah. I know I looked good.
♡♡♡
We got to the club a little late, like always. It was already rush hour at that point so we had no issues blending in with the crowd. The bouncers barely glanced at our fake IDs as long as we had our tickets.
I smiled casually and slipped inside after my friends
They scattered immediately.
Angel went straight to the bar, already eyeing the bartender she’d decided was her next 'main character.' Whenever she got obsessed with a story, she committed to it like her life depended on it. Farian disappeared into her group of gay friends who partied like it was their full-time job.
Addy?
Addy was already dancing like a possessed rich aunt with forty exotic cats waiting for her at home.
Laurel went straight to her club boyfriend with no hesitation, not a single pride in sight.
I stayed back, sipping my piña colada.
I already knew how this would go. I didn’t really drink, I just came to dance and make sure nobody woke up the next morning with regrets and missing memories.
I watched Angel flirt with all her reasons out the window. The bartender was cute… just not my type.
Actually, scratch that.
I did have a type. They need to pretty and strong. That's all.
The music pounded through the room. I smiled when my friends waved at me, then immediately scowled when the guy next to me blew cigarette smoke straight into my face.
I coughed, already reaching into my bag. My fingers brushed my inhaler.
Thank God.
My chest was tightening fast, I grabbed it and took a deep drag, forcing air back into my lungs. Slow and steady till I could breathe again.
My eyebrow knitted in confusion as the music stopped
The room filled with loud, drunk complaint. I frowned looking around for my friends.
Bang.
All our attentions shifted to the sound of the noise. Fear started creeping in, my hand clutched the inhaler tightly.
Screams erupted.
Panic surged through me, almost crippling me. Still, my eyes scanned the scattered crowd for my friends.
Then..
Another bang, this time I was sure it was a gun. I flinched, dropping low, my hands flying to my ear as the ringing set in.
People ran with no direction, just with the sole purpose of survival.
I pushed myself up, my heart racing violently. I couldn't panic, I needed to find them.
I heaved a sigh of relief when I spotted two of them hugging each other on the farthest end of club.
I grabbed my bag, clutching it as I made my way though the crowd.
Then, someone grabbed me. He held a picture up, checking it then looking at my face before nodding and yanking me closer to him.
I screamed.
"What...what are you doing?!" My voice barely came out right. The man holding me called out to someone. Another guy opened the door.
People rushed out while I was still being held. I was still stuck in the strong grasp of these strange men.
My mind scrambled, no relevant thought was forming. My breathing started slipping again. It was too fast and too shallow.
No. No. No.
My body shook uncontrollably, my chest tightening like something was squeezing the air out of me. My head throbbed, I tried to claw at the hand holding me.
Everything blurred. My fingers twitched uselessly then my vision darkened at the edges.
Everything went black.
