Lechen was the centre of military might in Europen but to many of her neighbours, she was the kingdom who guaranteed status quo. Her enemies often failed to assail her rivers and valleys, and they found themselves invaded in return. As a result, the people who lived within Lechen remained safe from harm until the Second Calamity. Given Lechen’s military position, her two greatest adversaries, Zhermannen and the Rus, signed an accord and invaded her lands from the east and west, overrunning the kingdom with brute force. It was no surprise that Lechen fell but they hardly learned from their mistakes. Come the end of the Second Calamity and the approach of the Third, a new, restored and revived nation, believed that she had regained her strength and waged many wars with her neighbours to test that theory. The result was defeating. No longer was Lechen the hegemon it believed itself to be and the Rus knew that to defeat Lechen, they needed only brute strength again which they had no lack of. The Confederacy pretended to be engaged in a stalemate with the AELON, pretending that they were unable to advance, but this gave the Lecher the false impression that her strategies, her defences, had worked.
