A world in a constant state of war produces a high number of orphans, their families killed on the battlefield, through diseases and raids. Some are even sold into slavery in exchange for food or coin, while others live out the rest of their lives on the streets, forming urchin gangs which often later evolve into banditry. However, the Rus were quick to realise the prospect of using orphans, despite their less warmongering attitudes. From a young age, orphans are easiest to teach and control. They are selected by military academies scattered around the lands of the Rus and thrown into a decade-long course of military training, but unlike any other course partaken by other children their age, these orphans go through substantial brainwashing. What comes out is a patriotic soldier seeking only glory for their motherland. Igor Rzhev was part of this Orphans’ Legion, and he was tutored by Leonid Vasilevsky, who believed that his student would one day surpass even Ivan Kolchakov, but driven by immense hatred and passion for glory, orphans are prone to take risks greater than even the most reckless soldiers would take because they have little to lose. An old orphan is one that you must fear.
