The crisp morning air of the late autumn day felt like an overture to a beastly winter, while a sparse procession of automobiles emitting black fumes sped up and down the unmarked and poorly paved concrete suburban street, which was riddled with potholes that threatened everyday motorists. Horns of distant ships blared from the deep-water port of Bristel, a town on the southern coast of the island nation of Alben, which overlooked the vast body of saltwater separating it from the mainland. There was a fleet’s worth of yachts and fishing boats anchored behind a storm shelter that curved out of the town’s waterfront, where voices of vendors and buyers from the morning markets, open since dawn, marked the beginning of day. Gulls cawed and glided through the sky, sometimes appearing magically afloat in the air. Most trees had been stripped bare to their branches, with the exception of some stubborn leaves. The foliage created a natural carpet over the pavement and puddles of thin ice, which began to crack under the warming sun that was much appreciated in a country known for its dismal winters. However, the sea breeze felt oddly drier than usual to the boy, whose breath turned white as soon as he stepped out of his home.
His name was Arminius Reichner, a schoolboy of ten, nearly eleven, who often had a slight smile. He was fair, and the femininity of his face was slowly wearing off as he matured, defining a blend of prettiness and handsomeness, but surprisingly, he was not as popular as one might think. Arminius was a dash taller than average, seeming proud of everything he did, but that was just a facade of his real character. The boy preferred to keep to himself and would not have hurt a flower without good reason. His caring eyes were always mindful of those around him, paying attention to every little detail that should or should not concern him. Among everything in his vast world, only one person consistently occupied his thoughts as he walked down the path of their front yard, flanked by two rows of evergreen trees, and passed through the gate anchored between their red brick walls.
Standing there on the pavement, his sister waited for him, rubbing her hands that stiffened from the cold, and when Arminius had finally caught up to her, she spun around and faced him. “I’ve got to run now.” Elise raised herself by the tips of her toes and leaned in to give Arminius a kiss on his lips before she landed on her heels again. “Don’t get into trouble.” She warned him as a reminder for his benefit and ran down the street in a hurry.
Arminius stayed his ground to make sure Elise did not trip or fall, and when the sight of her head sank beneath the brow of the road safely, he finally felt assured enough to begin his journey uphill towards his school. Pulling out an audio player from a pocket in his blazer, he swiped through a list of songs in its database and picked one playlist at random. The discs within the machine began to click and whirr as he plugged his wired speakers into his ear, his walk unmistakably following the beat of the music when its instrumental flowed into its verse.737Please respect copyright.PENANAC0pfRrNbqg
