Regular professionally trained soldiers begin their careers as one of three troops: soldier, cavalier, or bombardier. The lance corporal, also known as the lancer, is not expected to lead. That role is filled by the corporal, who is the commander of an infantry squad, which consists of fewer than ten men. The sergeant, the most senior of the non-commissioned officers, is usually in charge of the discipline and logistics of a century, a force of one hundred soldiers led by a lieutenant, the first commissioned rank at which pay becomes a guaranteed benefit of service in the army. A captain commands a chevron of three centuries, whereas a major commands a ten-century regiment. The lieutenant colonel or colonel aide, like the lance corporal, serves as an administrator in a legion, a force of ten thousand men led occasionally by a colonel but mostly by a higher-ranking legate. The brigadier, who usually serves in the military police or garrisons of fortresses and cities, works alongside the legate. A general third class, also known as a third general, is given command of a division of approximately twenty thousand men, and there are typically two divisions in a corps, which is led by a lieutenant general or colonel general, the first ranks granted complete autonomy. However, in major battles, lieutenant generals or colonel generals can lead armies made up of multiple corps if no other generals are present. Each nation has one marshal. In cases of hegemonic powers such as the Rus and the Middle Kingdom, the title of grand marshal is preferred when armies number in the tens of millions. This system serves as a guideline for most armies, but in times of war, the duties of a soldier will shift.
