There had only ever been two Calamities, two world wars, and two eras of unstoppable violence. The First Calamity began in 230 when the nations of Europen went to war over colonial rights in the New World and beyond. Revolutions sprung up around the continent as a result of socio-economic deprivation, and new empires were created. The war was finally ended in 289 when the first and last emperor of Franken, Napoleone di Buonaparte, was exiled from the continent, but some eight million people had been killed during the First Calamity. However, the casualties from the First Calamity were insignificant compared to those caused by the Second Calamity. An archduke of Austen was assassinated in 388, and the world once again plunged into chaos, but the atrocities that would define the era would not happen until 423. The nations of the Axis, including the Three Kingdoms of Zhermannen, the Tsarreich of the Rus, and the Empire of the Middle Kingdoms, gathered their armies and purged the world of lands that had not sworn allegiance to their alliance. Nearly two-thirds of the world population was exterminated in one fell swoop, and over half the world was rendered uninhabitable, which we call the Blightlands. The Second Calamity was brought to an abrupt end between 437 and 438 when Sean Kennedy sailed across the sea and joined arms with the various liberation movements of Europen to dismantle the Axis powers.
