The air on Planet X in the Azure Universe was thick with the scent of ozone and scorched earth. Two figures walked along a ridge overlooking the valley that housed the Main Lab—or what was left of it.
Tenzin, his golden robes tattered from his battle on Stellara Prime, walked with a rigid, furious stride. Beside him moved a figure cloaked in swirling shadows, the same entity who had snatched him from the jaws of death against Queen Lila.
"You say King Kael infiltrated the lab?" Tenzin asked, his voice low and dangerous.
The shadowed figure nodded, his form flickering as he walked. "Yes. While you were busy playing god on Stellara Prime, Kael and his samurai, Kenshiro, bypassed the outer defenses. They engaged King Arion directly."
Tenzin narrowed his eyes, scanning the horizon. "I sense nothing. No fluctuations of chi, no tremors of Forbidden Dominion Magic. If they fought, it is over. Arion must have wrapped it up. He wouldn't lose to a boy king."
As they crested the final hill, the Main Lab came into view.
Tenzin stopped dead. The shadowed figure paused beside him.
The facility was a ruin. The roof had been blown open, walls were crumbled, and smoke poured from the wreckage. But it was the ground outside that told the true story. The earth was littered with the bodies of Sentients—twisted metal and flesh scattered like discarded toys.
"Impossible," Tenzin whispered.
They descended quickly. As they approached the wreckage, a small group of First Generation Sentients—survivors who had been on the perimeter—rushed toward them. Their armor was cracked, their movements jerky with fear.
"Master Tenzin!" one of them rasped, bowing low. "You've returned!"
"What happened here?" Tenzin demanded, grabbing the Sentient by its collar. "Where is King Arion? Where is the army?"
The Sentient trembled. "King Kael... he was a monster. He tore through the defenses. He defeated Commander Aiden."
Tenzin released the Sentient in disgust. "Aiden? A Third Generation Sentient lost? Where is he now?"
"He... he was sent back to the Requiem Universe," the Sentient stammered. "King Kael ordered him to return, and he obeyed. He left."
"Coward," Tenzin spat. "He flees with his tail between his legs at the first sign of defeat. And what of Dr. Vorst?"
"Captured," another Sentient chimed in. "King Kael summoned a massive Shadow Dragon. He put Dr. Vorst and the swordsman, Kenshiro, on its back. Kenshiro was broken, barely alive, but the dragon took them away into the sky."
Tenzin’s fists clenched, his golden aura flaring. "We lost the researcher? The entire plan... failed?" He turned his blazing gaze back to the cowering soldiers. "And Arion? Surely he did not flee."
The First Generation Sentients exchanged nervous glances. Finally, one stepped forward.
"King Arion... he is gone."
"Gone where?"
"After King Kael captured him, we followed him," the Sentient said rapidly. "We ended up losing where King Kael went, so we decided to look for planets in the Universe near the 5 Universal Ring. We were startled to see Arion later on Planet Azure, lying on a hill in a field of flowers. He would not speak with us. He just lay there, sketching his ideas in the air. He looked... strange. Broken, perhaps. Or altered. He continued babbling about how 'total dominance' was a mistake. He said he was headed to Fort Vigilance to negotiate a peace with the Five Universes."
Tenzin stared at the Sentient, his mind reeling. Arion? The Tyrant King? The one I stood by? The man who wanted to reshape reality through force?
"Surely you are mistaken," Tenzin said, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. "He isn't deciding to side with them."
"He flew away," the Sentient confirmed. "Toward the Universal Ring. He left us behind."
Tenzin looked around at the devastation. The dream of the Azure Empire was crumbling before it had even truly begun.
"What of the Second Generation?" Tenzin asked, his voice hollow. "The Decima Vanguard? Morrigan? Zephyros?"
The Sentient lowered its head. "Dead. All of them. King Kael slaughtered them inside the lab. The only one left is Dagon Mirelock, and he is in critical condition, regenerating in the lower chambers."
Tenzin closed his eyes. Thirteen elites dead. The King gone rogue. The researcher captured.
"Fine," Tenzin growled, opening his eyes. Golden energy began to swirl violently around his fists. "If Arion is too weak to finish what he started, I'll do it myself. I'll go to Fort Vigilance and burn it to the ground."
"No."
The shadowed figure stepped forward, placing a hand on Tenzin's shoulder. The darkness around him dissipated, revealing the face of Darius Kaine.
"We need a plan, Tenzin," Darius said smoothly. "Rushing in there now is suicide. You saw what happened to Stellara Prime. The 5 Universes are regrouping, and they have power we didn't anticipate."
Tenzin slapped Darius's hand away. "I do not take orders from a stray dog of the Sovereignty."
"I am no one's dog," Darius replied coolly. "I am a survivor. Listen to me. If Arion goes to them, he goes. If he returns, we defer power back to him. But if he has truly betrayed the vision... then we must stay here and regroup."
Darius gestured to the surviving First Generation Sentients. "We still have an army. We still have Dagon. And we have something Arion ignored."
"And what is that?" Tenzin asked.
"The 6 Kingdoms," Darius said, a sinister smile playing on his lips.
Tenzin frowned. "Who? As far as I know, that is only a myth. There is no such thing."
"They are no myth," Darius said. "They are the true power of The Land of Spade. While Arion was obsessed with conquering the other universes, he ignored the giants in his own backyard. The 6 Kingdoms possess resources, magic, and technology that rival anything Dr. Vorst created. They hate the 5 Universes AND Eclipse Sovereignty as much as we do."
Darius walked closer to the rubble of the Main Lab.
"It is our best bet," Darius continued. "We ally with them. We offer them the Azure Universe's support. In exchange, they help us crush the resistance."
Tenzin considered this. Arion had abandoned them. The Sovereignty was unreliable. But an alliance with the ancient powers of the Land of Spade... that could change the tide.
"Two leaders," Tenzin said suddenly.
Darius turned back. "Excuse me?"
"We rule together," Tenzin declared, his voice firm. "Equal partners. We rebuild the Sentients, we stabilize the Azure Universe, and we approach the 6 Kingdoms as equals. Arion is the past. We are the future."
Darius grinned, extending his hand. "Agreed. To the Fractured Dominion."
Tenzin grasped Darius’s hand. The golden aura of the Infinite Fist merged with the dark shadows of the Shadowblade Master.
"Send the message," Tenzin commanded the trembling Sentients. "Broadcast it to every corner of the Azure Universe. King Arion has abandoned his throne. Tenzin and Darius Kaine are the new rulers. Any who oppose us will share the fate of the Decima Vanguard."
As the message began to transmit across the stars, Tenzin looked toward the sky, toward where he knew Fort Vigilance lay.
"Run while you can, Arion," Tenzin whispered. "Because when we meet again, I won't be your general. I'll be your executioner."
