Now this is the kind of question that makes me instantly like you! Corrupted love. 

It's definitely obsession that could leak into love. We don't know why he became a villian or how he got his powers. But we do know he cares on a level that makes Aurora a weakness and of some value. His world has shattered. And he is ready to peice it back together using someone else's blood and sinew as glue.
