“How long has it been?” I asked, finally breaking the silence between us. It’s already past 10 pm and the city still possesses life; The roaring sound of every vehicle that passes by and the illumination of every streetlight add up to the shimmers of the stars above. “Seven years?” I added.
“Seven years.” He muttered. I leaned against the roof top railing, letting the breeze dance with my hair. “Who would’ve thought we’d reach this far? Seven years of being friends, witnessing each other grow, and the list goes on.” Taking a deep breath, I released all the tension that was left unsaid then turned my attention to him just to find that he was already staring at me.
“What? Is there something on my face?” I asked, him shaking his head in response. “Then why are you looking at me like that?”
“Nothing.” He calmly responded with a slight smile on his face.
“Riv, stop teasing me. I saw that smile—it’s not funny.” I rolled my eyes at him. Our laughter mixed with the chaotic sound of the city, making the moment more nostalgic. A few moments later, silence wrapped around us once again. Not the awkward type, but the type that makes us both feel comfortable just by having each other's presence close.
“Ve?” He softly called out my name.
“Hmm?”
“Hmm, nothing.”
“What?” I shot him a slightly irritated look. “I am clearly enjoying the silence and you’re ruining it.”
“Wow, it’s not like you’ve endured someone who talks too much.”
“Is that your way of telling me that you hate it when I talk, Mister?” I asked sarcastically, raising one eyebrow as I remained eye contact with him.
Our laughter created chaotic music around us, as if every word that escapes from our mouth is hysterical. Finally, after years of wondering what he looks like while laughing, I finally got to see it in person. “You should smile more often, you look better when you wear it.“
“Venice, do you still have feelings for me?” My smile quickly faded as soon as he finished talking. I turned my gaze to the lights shimmering beneath us, quietly hoping that he’ll follow his question with the words I’m just kidding. Although, who am I to fool myself when I knew that at that moment, he’s serious. My heart started beating faster, maybe because I don’t know how to approach his question and it is making me madly nervous or, I just wanted to think that way because I know deep down I still do.
“Cause I know I still do.” My world slowed down while trying to process everything. “I never stopped loving you.”
